Srenluna

History

Establishment

Srenluna was established in 697 as a reaction to the creation of Arcane Machina. As the technology rapidly spread in popularity throughout Urushee, there was demand for the construction of dedicated facilities to produce it and support Ionin in its ongoing research. Initially starting as just its Industrial District, the presence of influential companies and requirements to house the workers for the rapidly expanding business mandated Srenluna becoming a fully fledged city within the first 2 years of its founding, eventually being established as Urushee's first capital.   As industrialisation began to spread across Urushee in the decades following the creation of Srenluna, significant opposition towards Srenluna began to mount from traditionalist members of elven society, who believed the capital threatened to erase the older ways of life that had been preserved in Urusheen society. This came to a head in 732, when a terrorist cell used Magic to bombard the newly opened Grand Urusheen Railway station in the capital city. This marked the end of the movement as public opinion drastically shifted in favour of the Industrialist factions.

Post Collapse

As the largest center of Arcane Machina production in Urushee, Srenluna was particularly hard hit by the events of The Collapse. Very little of the city survived the ensuing chaos, with vital infrastructure being disrupted or outright destroyed by the immediate failures of their Arcane Machina, and pre-established figures of authority and the Urusheen military were unable to quell the mass panic among the populace.   It would not be until 876, two years after The Collapse, that attempts to re-establish the capital would begin in earnest. Surviving wealthy families from before the Collapse that had initiated martial law in the High District, through the use of hired mercenaries that previously belonged to Srenluna's law enforcement that had dissolved following the event. While these reconstruction efforts would ensure that the capital would be able to survive and offer a degree of safety from the outside world, they would be used to widen the class disparity that the city had suffered from previously. A large, physical barrier was constructed separating the High District from the rest of the population, and the influence of Srenluna's new benefactors ensured that the majority of resources brought in to aid with the efforts would be directed towards their needs.

Demographics

Species/Ethnicities

The majority of civilians living in Srenluna are Elven, much like Urushee as a whole. Other races that make up a minority of the overall demographic can be found there as well, such as Goblins, Dwarves, and Draconis. After The Collapse occurred, the overall ratio of these races shifted further towards the non-Elven races as refugees from dedicated ethnic settlements in Urushee moved to the Capital.

Wealth Disparity

Srenluna is particularly notable for its economic differences between classes and their integration into society. Whereas most other particularly influential or wealthy settlements and civilisations, such as Ihhir, gate themselves off from the outside world, Srenluna divided itself into distinct districts during its reconstruction after The Collapse. While such divisions naturally seem to have existed before The Collapse, the situation was exacerbated by those remaining in power at the time producing the resources needed to quite literally wall off their neighbourhoods from the rest of the capital's society.   Those that either possesed enough wealth to consider themeslves upper class before the apocalyptic events, or managed to secure themselves such a fortune through material goods in the chaotic months after the Collapse, live in relative comfort and security at the northern end of the capital, close to the Sage's Hall, an institute of the previous governing body for Urushee. Other classes, however, take residence and work in the majority of the larger, more sprawling compartments of the city. For more information, refer to the Districts section of this article.

Government

Srenluna is primarily governed by the Authority of Srenluna, an office of Law Enforcement that assumed control of the capital following the dissolution of the Urusheen Council of Sages after The Collapse. Benefacted by the wealthy classes of the capital, the office's primary focus is on maintaining order and peace in areas critical to the maintenance of its upper class districts, rather than the protection of the wider populace.   Perhaps it is due to this that a large criminal element has established itself in Srenluna in the centuries following The Collapse, capable of conducting their activities with little threat of disruption from figures of authority. However, if a significant enough threat is established in the lower economically developed parts of the capital that could disrupt the overall operation of its society, the Authority of Srenluna will dispatch highly trained task forces to resolve the matter with brutal efficiency.

Structure

Srenluna is divided into 5 districts, separating the various elements of society and their functions:

High District

The High District is where the Upper Class citizens, Authority of Srenluna, and other affluent bodies reside. Physically walled off from the remaining districts, those residing there live in blissful ignorance of the affairs of Erra and the rest of Urushee. A largely inefficient means of life, the High District imports a wide variety of wares from other settlements throughout Urushee, as well as a significant portion of the resources generated by the Industrial district. Reports obtained from those that have access to the District (such as traders of luxurious goods) report a locale of luxury similar to that found in Ihhir, with pristine architecture and a lavish way of life matching almost fairytale-like descriptions of royalty.   Entrance to this part of Srenluna is heavily restricted for those not related to, or vouched by, the various families that live there already, with only two main entrances to the District being present; The first is a large gate located directly in the center of its division from the rest of the Capital, at the end of the long road leading through the heart of Srenluna and the rest of the country. The second is a far smaller series of side paths that connect the High District and the Closed Door District, allowing wealthy patrons to peruse the various attractions and entertainment offered. Both entrances are fiercely guarded by the Authority of Srenluna; Unauthorised access will typically result in immediate ejection, but several instances of fatal exchanges for trespassing offences have been recorded.

General Populace District (GPD)

The GPD is where the majority of Srenluna's populace resides. While not matching the description of a slum, the area is significantly worse-off than other areas of the capital city, consisting of buildings designed around pure function over aesthetic to maximise resource efficiency, tightly packing in neighbourhoods and residential areas with domiciles that stretch several stories high. The majority of these were made during the reconstruction of Srenluna in the decades following The Collapse, and little in the way of construction or refurbishment of the city has been conducted since, leaving many areas of the GPD in disrepair and relying on the efforts of its own communities to maintain.   With a lack of legal oversight from the Authority of Srenluna, the GPD is a hive for the criminal elements of Srenluna, with its various gangs utilising the dense urban areas as hideouts for their various activities. Crime runs rampant, and any attempts at a unified civilian lawkeeping force in the past have been quickly dispersed by the many major and minor gangs that reside there.

Industrial District

The Industrial District is the primary location of work for residents of Srenluna, as the capital remains one of the most significant exporters to the rest of Urushee for a wide variety of goods - Produce, Mechanical objects, construction supplies, and so on. The primary train yard for the Grand Urusheen Railway is located within the Industrial District, as well as the largest station for civilian routes, with train circuits that cover the entirety of Urushee. As such, most of the Industrial District is comprised of Warehouses, Factories, and other manufacturing facilities such as Forges. The Industrial District is considered a key factor in the continued survival of the nation of Urushee, as its exports are relied upon by smaller settlements doing business with the Capital in order to keep vital supply lines or other means of life intact.

Closed Door District

The infamous Closed Door District is the smallest of Srenluna's Districts, and is an area solely focused on providing entertainment services for adult ages. This includes Game resorts such as Casinos and Betting avenues (for events such as races, fighting, and other high stakes games), as well as high end auction houses, businesses licensed to sell firearms and drugs, "VIP Hotels", and more. While the District is tightly monitored by the Authority of Srenluna, there are also rumours of black market activity occurring. As the only District in Srenluna where richer individuals share locations with the general populace, security is tightly managed, and there are often areas that are restricted from access by individuals unable to submit to a "wealth check".

Commerce District

The Commerce District encapsulates the area surrounding Srenluna's main road leading towards the rest of Urushee, bordering the Industrial District. Traders from throughout the country, as well as some from other nations, visit regularly in order to conduct business in markets and auctions, being a large hub for Urushee's trade. Many smaller shops and businesses are established here as well, with many enterprising individuals looking to earn a comfortable life in the capital participating in a cutthroat and highly competitive environment. Despite being a highly active part of the city for both outsiders and residents, it receives only minor jurisdiction from the Authority of Srenluna, with numerous protection rackets being run by the local criminal gangs. Those conducting business from outside the city will often bring their own protection in the form of hired mercenaries as a result.

Industry & Exports

Srenluna is primarily financed by the export of various wares and goods created in its Industrial District, as well as Tourism to its Closed Door District. It is a notable exporter of the following:
  • Bikes, Transport Vehicles
  • Metal
  • Construction Material (Plaster, Brick, Mortar)
  • Produce
  • Electronics
  • Books
  • Medicine
  • Confectionary
