The Den

The Den stood within the walls of Jeyton City in the East Quarter, during the period when Genasi were enslaved. It was a cramped and ugly sectioned off area within the city - just behind The Roost.

The people of Jeyton City would prefer to forget the Genasi Lane (The Den) ever existed.

The Den remained a very crowded section of the city owing to both rapid population growth and the refusal of Jeyton's municipal authorities to allow the area of The Den to expand.

Every facet of life was regulated by the city's regulations pertaining to the treatment and housing of the Genasi. For example, Genasi were not allowed to leave the Den during nights, Sundays, certain celebrations, or during any royal appearances. In addition to isolating the different types of Genasi, these regulations included a number of restrictive and discriminatory rules. The laws regulated the location certain people were allowed to live within the city, the collection of deliveries, and the acceptable professions. Every Genasi was required to have a tattoo on the back of their neck, so show if in service or "hireable". Then the influx of Genasi into Jeyton City was strictly limited to those owned.

Altogether only 100 of each type of Genasi were meant to live in the Den. However, at one point there was 3,000 Genasi in 250 residences. The Laws also stated that only 10 weddings would be permitted per year in the Den. Even those Genasi who became more wealthy and influential (usually from sale of Oōruritē), such as Shell Mayer Roth (Earth-Beach Genasi), were not excluded from these Laws.
