The Crimson Betrayer

Vermiculus (a.k.a. Crimson)

He whose name was erased from history. The Crimson Betrayer.   The Crimson Betrayer was a Major God during the first age who grew discontent with and jealous of their creator, Truth. He drew followers from around the world, and his lieutenants plunged the world into a dark period of war and terror. During the final Convergence of the first age, he used his power to attempt to kill Truth in a surprise attack. The two fought and the universe shook, causing massive damage and destruction across Estellia.   Eventually, the Betrayer was struck down by Truth and he fell to a once-empty plane, but not before he dealt a fatal blow to his creator.   Cursed to this day, the Crimson Betrayer's name has been erased from history. Few recall his true name, and fewer still ever sympathised with him.

Personal history

Born into Estellia as one of the Major Gods, the Betrayer was quick to get to work on shaping the worlds and planes of the universe. As the last of the Major Gods to be created, he wanted to prove himself to his peers and to his parental figure. He would work hard, seeking approval and praise from those that came before him.   As the years went by and the gods began to gain followers and religions around them, the Betrayer had still yet to find a domain that they were interested in. The work was done, the world had been created and yet he did not have the praise that he wanted. He did not do this for the benefit of mortals, but for the image that his fellows had of him.   This frustration of not getting the recognition he wanted, combined with the lack of followers leading him to be less powerful than his siblings, led him to become more distant from the divine. Feelings of envy began to fester into something much darker. Evil began to spread through his heart, and the betrayer spread this evil wherever he went. What was once a world of peace and content, was now introduced to Sin. The world began to see murder, war, and greed. The other gods confronted him, angry at what he had unleashed into the world. But the betrayer rejected them, lashing out at how they blindly followed their parents teachings and that they could do whatever they wish if they were truly free, to Sin was to be free.   For years the world continued to lose its once perfect peace, but it was nothing when compared to the world as it is in the present. It was by all means, still a paradise. The Betrayer continued to spread suffering in the small parts of the world that he walked, like a walking plague of sin. Some of those sinners eventually turned to praise him. But he still felt great envy over his siblings followers and power. He wanted to undo the hard work that he had done for their people when he crafted so much of the world for them. But mostly he envied Truth, to the point that he began to hate his parent. He hated how powerful they were, despite doing the least work in his eyes. He hated how Truth would not praise him. He hated how Truth did not help him. He wanted Truth to lose all of their followers. He wanted to hurt Truth. He wanted to kill them.   It was in the final years of the first age, that he began to plot his murder. In just a few years there would be a Convergence, a time where planes of existence overlap, and this one would involve all of the planes. This would allow great feats of magic to occur, great enough that a major god such as himself could kill a perfect god. During this period the evil truly began to change them, and a sickly crimson began to creep across their body and magic. He used his powers to create powerful demons, who would act as his lieutenants, and called for his followers from around the world to gather. For the first time in the worlds history, war raged across all continents. What was once a world of mostly peace and tranquilly, had now suddenly plunged into darkness and fire. Alliances formed between the free countries, between every race and culture, to fight against the encroaching wave of evil, but even with all their efforts combined they were only able to hold off the Betrayer's forces for so long.    Many countries were ruined, their cities reduced to ash and rubble and their people spread across the land like leaves in the wind. Atop of the wastes the lieutenants built their fortresses and dungeons, stopping any attempts from the alliance to re-take the land they had lost. The gods could only look on in despair as truth ordered them to not interfere physically, all the while the Betrayer continued to prepare for the day of convergence.   Eventually that day came and the Betrayer confronted the creator in the Heavens whilst the other gods were confined to their own realms. Nothing is known of what was said, but the fighting did not break out immediately. Across every plane the sky was ripped open, the ground shook, and hell rained down upon the universe.   After all was done, the Crimson Betrayer was struck down from the heavens by Truth and landed on an empty plane within the Astral Sea. They had been defeated and as they lay dying, the crimson spread from their bleeding corpse into the land around him and spread across the world.
