Bone Wood

(English is my third foreign language...)

Nepeta trees can be found continent-wide on Damus. These are called as "Bone trees" by the Beastman, because of their white and gray bark and light colored wood, which is greatly different from the otherwise native mahogany and ebony trees.
Nepeta trees sprout out their seeds on their own branches high up, where there is even more light. They drop the small shoots around themselves, thus forming whole groves.

The Nepeta tree's material, the Bone wood, is light and breaks easily and even the fresh cut wood is surprisingly dry. It burns higher temperature than most freshly harvested wood in the jungle, making it suitable to fire starting, roasting and cooking.

Bone wood is also used to make jewelry, in the forms of wooden beads and thin chips, but it's not good material for tools or weapons. Some Segai Chieftains gives his hunters (warriors) small, perforated Bone wood discs, the size of a child's palm, in exchange for the successful hunt or for goods obtained during the post-battle looting. They can use those tokens for food, drink and equipment in the village.

The Bugit beastman prefer to collect the fallen branches or broken wood, while the Segaii are able to cut down healthy, larger trees with their stone axes.

Damus suffered greatly from the presence of the volcanoes, but forest fires after storms are common around the Nepeta groves. If a lightning strikes in a Bone tree, it can quickly cause a very large fire. The Segaii therefore always try to cut down these trees around their villages and camps, and prefer to travel longer distances for fuel. In the distant places, they always leave a "mother tree" that regrows the grove in a few moon cycles.

Nice Article!
I like the idea that those Trees, while beeing a good resource of fire wood, they can't be really used for anything else because they are so brittle. That's a good balance - Also I like that they regrow relativly fast so the natives can use them AND be enviormental friendly ^^
