Travel Rations

Travel rations are food often eaten by travelers.  Their contents vary depending on the culture that prepared them.  These foods have a long shelf life and are packaged so that they can easily be transported by the travelers.  Common foods that are included in travel rations are bread, local fruits that have been dried such as apples and prunes, uncured sausage, and cheese. These foods are often wrapped in cheesecloth and tied closed.     Human travel rations often include: salted meats, flatbread, ground wheat, barley or millet to make porridge, potatoes, onions, beef or pork jerkies, raisins, hard biscuits, cured bacon, dried beans or peas or lentils, coffee, almonds, walnuts, hard boiled eggs, hand pies, salami, and cheeses such as Brie, Gruyère, Parmesan, and Gouda.  If the travel rations come from dwarven areas, the food inside might include various dried mushrooms, goat or lamb spicy sausages, smoked meats, hard tack, dried goat or lamb jerky, hard cheese, potted Cave-Smelt (a tiny sightless fish) that has been salted, smoked, and cooked before potting.   Travel rations prepared in an area of Gnomes might include pan fried smelt, spiced goat cheese, Gnome shortbread, hard boiled quail eggs packed in rolled oats (to keep safe), dried figs, and smoked goat sausages, hazelnuts and pistachios, dried apples and pears, pickled onions, pickled cauliflower, and pickled beetroot.  Halfling travel rations often include: Honeytack, which is similar to honey cornbread muffins, aged beef and pork sausages, mini toasts or crackers, cheddar cheese wedges, pickles, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, carrots, sweetened dried fruit, and nuts. Travel rations from the Tiefling village of Pantoran Village might include dough pouches filled with spicy meats or vegetables, pickled cabbage, pickled eggs, and dried or fermented meat, spicy game meat sausages, sweet breads, honey, Tiefling candy, Pemmican, dried whole fish, powdered bark, dried peppers, and peppered goat cheese.
