Saltmarsh

Nestled on the opposite side of the K’Tawl Swamp Saltmarsh sits hugging the shores of the Mooren River. Unlike nearby Stilben the stink of the K’Tawl drifts away from the city of Saltmarsh. The rich live in larger houses near the Mooren, the poorest live in the slums nearest to K’Tawl. Saltmarsh is a nondescript fishing village tucked away on the southern coast of the human Kingdom of Tal’Dorei.

Demographics

Saltmarsh’s roughly 5,000 residents are predominantly human, with the dwarven mining contingent of about two hundred workers the largest non-human faction in town. Elves and halflings draw no special notice. The residents react to other visitors, especially tieflings and dragonborn with a mixture of curiousity and suspicion.

Government

The town is lead and policed by a council of leaders lead by Margrave Eda Oweland. Including Eda there are five members of the council each leaders within the town taking on responsibility for a different matter.   Gellan Primewater- Councilor in charge of Local Commerce and Public Relations   Anders Solmor- Councilor in charge of Trade and Imports and management of the Docks   Eliander Fireborn- Captain of the Marsh Shield Guard   Manistrad Copperlocks- Ambassador of Emon and leader of the Mining operation

Defences

The Marsh Shield is the town guard. It, along with a small group of marines led by married couple Tom and Will Stoutly, watch over the town and the docks.

History

After many generations of peaceful rule within the city of Emon, there spread word of a shadow in the South that threatened outlying townships skirting the edges of the Council’s influence. Trade caravans that hail from the Rifenmist Peninsula began to vanish, while the autonomous villages south of the Verdant Expanse sent for aid and armed protection against a “nightmare of fire and malice.” Sovereign Odellan Tal’Dorei felt that the economic cost of sending a regiment that far south to outsider communities without confirmation of threat was a misuse of resources.   This neglect also allowed piracy and banditry to flourish. With the fear of the threat to the West the south eastern coast was left to police itself Saltmarsh and Stilben and other towns along the coast kept to fishing and tried to avoid the eyes of the Council and the terror in the West.   Over the decades of neglect the pirates who prowled the waters off of Saltmarsh grew strong enough to create their own realm, a loose confederacy known as the hold of the Sea Princes.   With the rise of that nation came increased raids on Saltmarsh and it’s neighbors.
