League of Miracles
“The magic of tomorrow is the miracle of today.” Such is the credo of the League of Miracles, a small but popular group of mages that is largely the reason why Tal’Dorei has recovered so rapidly from the near-apocalyptic destruction of the Elemental Scions. Westruun and Emon rose from rubble to the height of their former glory in a matter of months.
The people of Tal’Dorei adore the league. Their mighty spellwrought adranachs, astral constructs made of magical energy, can be seen lifting thousand-pound bricks of limestone high into the sky to rebuild walls, towers, and even castles in a matter of days. Their beautiful and near-angelic appearance attracts much attention when arriving in a new town, making their presence a town-wide spectacle. The League arcanomancers have also become folk heroes and celebrities for their miraculous acts, which range from healing those maimed in the Scions’ attack to transmuting raw timber, mud, and straw into full-fledges houses.
For most of Tal’Dorei’s elite, the League of Miracles is likewise a great ally. The League’s newfound wealth has allowed them to shower their investors with gifts, including presenting politically important individuals across Tal’Dorei with their very own personal adranachs. Flying into public events on the back of an adranach has become a trend amongst the biggest political supporters of the League, a flashy way of announcing their proud friendship with the republic’s saviors.
Yet, not everyone sees the league as an ally. In the early aftermath of the Scions’ defeat, the new and untested Tal'Dorei Council put out thousands of bounties on reconstruction projects to get their towns and cities back on their feet, and local mayors and margraves across the nation agreed to these subsidies to reduce the cost of reconstruction for their already devastated populace. They expected Tal’Dorei’s rebirth to be a multigenerational undertaking—yet the League of Miracles snapped up these bounties like candy, and the league does not work their miracles cheaply. Bills for hundreds of thousands of gold pieces’ worth of bounties found their way to the desks of local leaders and to the Tal’Dorei Council by the end of the year. Such vast wealth for thirty years’ worth of rebuilding in three years’ time simply did not exist.
With the republic so heavily indebted to the League, the arcanomancers have gained significant leverage over their political allies (and especially over their enemies). The Wondermaker, leader of the League, is considered by some to be an unofficial ambassador to the Tal’Dorei Council, not representing a settlement in Tal’Dorei but rather the political interests of the League itself. The Wondermaker has gained much favor with the marginalized people of Tal’Dorei, seen as a man of action that has revolutionized the meaning of “progress”. The League’s success has only exacerbated the already popular belief that the Tal’Dorei Council is a slow and ineffective governing body that brings little benefit to the smaller, more isolated populations of the republic.
