Mordenkainen, one of the Great Sages of the Age of Masters forms the Circle of 8, a group of 8 individuals with incredible magical prowess. They go on to found the College of Apokrifos (Greek for "Arcane"), which teaches thousands of great wizards their abilities and is still a major national institution in Ezrion today.

Mordenkainen was born in 258 of The Age of Masters, under the Empire of Koth. He invested most of his time in developing his magical powers and creating spells. His first attempt at the Circle of 8, the Citadel of 8, took complete control over the Empire of Koth and instilled a magocracy. The puppet Emperor of Koth, Stilton the Cruel, under control of the evil lich Vecna, slaughtered 7 of the 8 in the Citadel. Mordenkainen escaped and cloned his former compatriates to stop Vecna, forming the Circle of Eight.
