Porter
The porters are a minor order of clergy. Their duties are to ring the church bell, open the church door, prepare the book of scripture for the preacher, and guard the door during the celebration of mass. Porters also keep the keys to the sacristy, and are therefore also the guardians of church treasures.1
The duties of the order do not require much learning, though some porters are learned and regard the order as a stepping stone to higher office.
