Workers begin to expand and fortify a network of natural caverns into a catacomb.
Prince Digory l'Intrépide, Prince of The Tiers and sentinel of Aruna, had finally quelled the outbreak of the Plague of the Red Tears both in his principality and the shattered remains of what was was once the Empire of the Sun. His own wife, Arushnee, was a carrier even though she was not affected. In an effort to heal her, she was placed inside a Samraaji relic, a "healing cocoon," as it was believed to be. Rather than heal her, though, it turned her into a desiccated and leathery mummy ,and yet she was still contagious.
In order to stop the Plague once and for all, Prince Digory ordered his beloved wife's mummy to be destroyed. However, all efforts to do so--axes, fire, lightning, acid--failed, and a mere touch of the body would continue to spread the infection.
So Digory ordered the creation of an oubliette to forever seal Arushnee away and stop the plague from happening again.
