The Samraaji establish their dominance over the sentient peoples of Vasudha (the world)

The Samraaji (meaning: The People Who Come From the Dawn) arrive in four interstellar vessels and decide to use the planet to restock their fleet's fuel stores, as their sensors indicated that Vashuda had high concentrations of neodymium, which their coldfire reactors needed.. At the time of their arrival, they find "primitives" on the surface, including humans, elves, and halflings living non-technological, agrarian lives.

The Samraaji decide to "temporarily" enslave the primitives to work the mines for them, using a 60-to-1 time dilation to speed up the process for themselves. The Samraaji's initial plan was to stay only a few years (a blink of an eye to the long-lived Smraaji) to amass enough stores of neodymium to continue exploring the galaxy. However, their leader, General Maharaja, and her lover, Chief Science Officer Thrym, enjoyed "playing gods" with the primitives and dragged out their stay for 30 time-dilated years (1800 years to the people on Vasudha).

During that time, they experimented with gene splicing the sentient primitives with some of local beasts that were also native to the planets. Mixing humans and tigers gave them Rakshandans; combining elves and elephants produced Loxodons. These were the only two viable species they managed to create...of course, there were dozens of "failed experiments" that either died immediately or turned into intractable monsters.
