Dragonspine Mountains
“Cold, ugly mountains home to dragons, liches and giants. Seriously, why does anyone even live here?!”A serious of mountain ranges and peaks that serve as a natural barrier separating the North Moonsea from the Ride. Treacherous and inhospitable with unpredictable weather patterns, few dare to try and cross the miles of ragged rocks due to the hostile terrain alone. Not only this, but the mountains are home to any number of dangerous monsters and creatures who inhabit the caves, ruins and forgotten outposts hidden amongst its jagged peaks. Goblin tunnels run through the mountains and regularly raid south and giants roam the peaks for easy food, be it man or sheep. True to its name sake, dragons also make their lairs here, including Fangork himself before he laid waste to Phlan. Even for all its dangers, the Mountains bear signs of civilisations keen on exploiting its riches. A number of human and Dwarven mining communities, in part funded, sponsored or owned by the region’s city states, have grown and prospered at mountain’s base. Eccentrics, Orders and other secretive communities have also found solace in the mountains, though keep to themselves and shun outsiders. Of particular note is the Zhentarim fortress Citadel of the Raven which guards the West peaks and is a major if not secretive base of operations for the Zhent. All these settlements rely on trade, either amongst themselves or with the wider Moonsea, to survive the hostile lands. Valuable ores and treasures are sent south from Aethelney docks via the Stanjow River & Phlan in exchange for coin and vital supplies and play a key role in the region's economies.
