Sokol Keep

An old keep located on Thorn Island just off the Bay of Phlan, it serves as the town's light house due to its magically infused beacon that guides ships into the bay and docklands. For many, Sokol Keep is a sailors first sight of the town and from a distance strikes an intimidating pose to those who sail past. Built out of blocks of heavy stone, the walls are fifty feet high with battlements, murder holes and landings for larger weapons. If that wasn't enough to deter an assault, Thorn Island around it is just as dangerous, consisting of steep cliff faces, ragged rocks and restless waters ready to drag fool hardy assailants to their deaths. The Keep's main feature is it's large tower with accompanying beacon that can be seen for miles in all directions, ensuring safe passage for passing ships and vital to the town's trade.   House Sokol, one of Phlan's oldest Great Houses, has claim to the keep and maintains it on behalf of the town. They house a nominal presence and staff on the site to ensure its upkeep and at one stage even building a small mansion into the side of the keep to expand their operations. However, apart from this and a skeleton crew of Black Fists posted to guard and maintain the beacon there is little else. Once the first line of defence against attacks from the Moonsea, it would have housed a small garrison of troops, archers & siege weapons on the walls and a clear axis of attack on any vessels attempting to enter Phlan. Now its walls and posts lie empty and few ever visit the imposing structure.
