The Whispering Eye Tavern
The Whispering Eye Tavern, previously knows as the Slug and Cabbage, used to be a run-down watering hole, familiar to the denizens of the Heapside Ward as a place where the booze was watery, the seating was wobbly, and the food would send you to the jakes faster than a pickpocket steals your purse. That all changed recently when the new owners moved in, renovated the decor and the menu, and renamed the place after the boss's girlfriend's favorite dessert. Nowadays, the atmosphere is perfect for storytelling and rumor mongering, the ale comes in Tipsy Angel barrels, and the food is prepared by an excellent cook.
The main room is large, with booths along the front windows and along the back wall. The bar is right in line with the main doors and guards the stairs that lead to the owners' private apartments. A huge stage, flanked by roaring fireplaces, hosts a variety of entertainment most nights. Lately, a mysterious Bard has arrived in town and become a popular fixture at the Eye. The center of the main floor also sports a north-style brazier for heat in the winter and meat-grilling on holidays.
Despite the name, no extra-curricular services are available at the Eye. The upstairs rooms are not rented and serve as the home for the owners. However, the quality of the food, drink, and song are more than enough to keep the customers happy. The public of Heapside also appreciates that this is a place where barfights are not tolerated, nor is carrying off the boss's girlfriend to join a ship's company as the entertainment.
The roof of the building is flat and the owners have converted it to a private patio. There is plenty of party seating, a nice brazier, and easy access to their apartments. That said, security at the Eye is second-to-none, though the exact mechanism is not obvious to the public nor well-known. The rumormill says that there are significant magical defenses, and more than one troublemaker has gone to the jakes only to find himself a block away, naked, and with little memory of how he got there.
All in all, the Eye is family-friendly and children are welcome to come with their families. After the dinner hour, the atmosphere changes as the last of the families depart for home and the mood takes on a more adult-oriented theme. So, you might just meet an after-dinner conversation companion at the Eye, but you'll have to find somewhere nearby to continue your discussions. No such services, alas!
