Order of the Gauntlet
Whether I stand with my comrades or I stand alone, stand I will against this evil that descrates our world until it is smitten or I draw my last breath. I stand in the name and in honour of mighty Torm, The Hand of Righteousness and, if I should fall, I will fall knowing for certain I will be welcomed to his embrace because I chose to stand.Lord Elluard Sansonnet, at the Battle of the Evermoors
In simplest terms, which are the most accurate, the Order of the Gauntlet is a coalition of morally upstanding warriors, paladins and clerics who zealously dedicate themselves to the destruction of evil. Unified as brothers and sisters in arms, bonded by fervent religious beliefs or staunch dedication to enforcing justice in the realms, members of the Order revere their god, honour their friends and allies, and have utterly resolute faith in themselves.
Unlike many of the other factional organisations, the doctrine of the Order of the Gauntlet is unequivocal and incontrovertible: respond with full force the moment evil acts, and not a moment before. When laws are broken, treaties are disregarded, corruption is sighted or iniquity is enacted, the Gauntlet strikes hard and fast, without waiting for permission or the blessing of distant authorities. The creed is clear to all: wickedness must be met immediately and annihilated, or it may swiftly overcome all.
Most Knights of the Gauntlet venerate either the God of Guardians, Helm, one of the two deities of the Triad, Torm or Tyr, or the Poet of Justice, Hoar, and, in the name of that god, devote themselves to smiting evil, enforcing justice and enacting vengeance, believing that power comes from commitment to that conviction.
While the Gauntlet is not exclusively composed of soldiers and fighting priests, a potential candidate to the Order must be able to prove an indubitable ability and willingness to combat evil and give it precedence over all other considerations, and also demonstrate capacity for mutual trust that runs deeper than the bonds of family. Any great warrior knows that the whole must always be greater than the sum of its parts and there are few, if any, “lone wolves” in this organisation.
