Mental characteristics
Personal history
Opal grew up in Candlekeep, the fortress library overlooking the Sea of Swords, along the Sword Coast.
She was taken there after a priest, returning to the Temple of Oghma within Candlekeep came across the abandoned baby while waiting on his dawn ferry from Balder's Gate to Candlekeep. She was inside a rotten, wooden bucket that had been left in the ocean, seemingly with the hope of letting the water dispose of the unwanted child. Her infantile screams were almost muffled by the crashing waves, but he managed to spot the bucket bobbing out to sea. Taking mercy on the malnourished thing, he tore linen from his cloak, wrapped her up and delivered her to Candlekeep.
The first tielfing to be housed at Candlekeep, Opal came to know the prejudice against her infernal bloodline well. The inhabitants of the surround areas often whispered all kinds of malicious drivel about the little "devil-child pet" the monks kept and would never allow their to speak with her.
She did, however, find solace in the arcane arts and quickly began showing a natural aptitude for spell craft. Consequently, the monks immediately enrolled her in wizardry classes. Since that moment, Opal dedicated herself to proving every insult wrong and becoming the most successful wizard possible.
Her teenage years were slightly better, as she had won over many people with her wit, diligence and intelligence but still, there were some folk who would never change their minds. Many merchants and visiting nobles cautioning their sons not to look you in the eyes, lest they be seduced by a succubus in disguise. Similarly, young squires and guardsmen stationed at Candlekeep for training often either belittled her, sought to fight her or foolishly bet that one of them could bed the demon before their visit was over. The only folk who treated her kindly was the inn owner, Marcella "Marcy" Marsa, her son Asa Marsa and their stablehand, Killian Eldoor.
This is where she also met her rival, Vadania Galanodel. Vadania was everything Opal wasn't - rich, showy and glamorous. Opal would step toe-to-toe with her in class which only served to drive each of them harder. Initially cruel to Opal, Vadania has settled into a more friendly rivalry with her as they have grown.
The monks would go on to entrust Opal with ascribing duties as a young adult. When she showed proficiency in this, they also allowed her to stand as an appraiser at the Halls of Wisdom. To gain entry, a visitor must gift the library collection with a new tome of immense value - nothing valued under 1000gp. Visitants would often scoff in disbelief or scowl in horror when first encountering the tielfing but Opal learned to overcome this by shrewdly reminding the patron that she, and she alone, was the only thing standing in the way between them and entry to the Halls of Wisdom.
Before her 24th birthday, Angmar Anoram, her teacher passed away of natural causes. However, before he died, he gave his student a letter - inside was a signed request for a pilgrimage of knowledge. Opal, who only knew a life of seclusion within the walls of the keep, was being granted a chance to venture into the outside world (much to the chagrin of Vadania).
Secretly, Opal knew exactly what tome she wished to hunt for - the lost diaries of Farideh, the Brimstone Angel. Farideh was a tielfing warlock and hero who fought many battles and became an exemplary to all tieflings living outside the shadows. Though she would not care to admit any sentimentalism, Opal secretly wishes to find her writings and publish her own anthology to spread more positive views about tieflings in the future. That would be her contribution to the annals of Candlekeep library.

Education
As she grew and started to show talent in the magical arts, the monks of Candlekeep enforced a strict schedule of training and formal education upon the young tielfing.
Her main teacher and mentor was Angmar. A former head appraiser, he spent his twilight years training young wizards who study within Candlekeep. He was very tough on Opal but he would reward her devotion with free access to the Great Library.
On his deathbed, he gave Opal her last task in the form of a Letter of Pilgrimage. This was Opal's opportunity to take all his past lessons and use them to traverse the outside world and gain knowledge herself.
Employment
After being given a Letter of Pilgrimage by Angmar, she began she found herself under the employment of Gundren Rockseeker. He wished for Opal to come along on his quest to find the Spellforge as a representative of Candlekeep and this began her relationship with the town of Phandalin and The Maw.

- The Maw appoint a guard-captain named Silhara.
Failures & Embarrassments
The Daran Edermath Aftermath:
- During her first few weeks in Phandalin, Opal ventured to Edermath Orchard to speak with Daran Edermath. His genuine kindness mixed with lack of clothing flustered Opal, causing her to stuttered and babble before leaving in a hurried huff.
- During the party to celebrate the liberation of Phandalin from the Black Spider, Opal succumbed to the alcohol and enjoyed the party. She managed to shyly flirt with Daran (culminating in a drunken kiss) but when final advance was rejected (due to Daran's respect for her) she responded by making a last ditch effort; going halfway up the stairs, dropping her outer robe in full view of Daran before slinking inside her room. Daran downed the rest of his drink and followed her, spending the night.
- The morning after the party, Opal woke up alone. Daran had penned her a note explaining that he needed to go tend to his orchard. He wished to respect Opal's independence once again but still, he felt rejected. Which led to weeks spent avoiding Daran.
- After coming home from Barovia, Opal also avoided him, not wishing him to gaze upon her broken form. He cornered her, late at night in Stonehill Tavern before bed and spoke to her then. She could not look at him and could not speak to him properly. Before leaving he grabbed her hand and pat it. Opal tensed up and he left.
- Opal began treating Daran coldly after this; occassionally lashing out at him when they trained. When Daran sent The Maw on their mission in the Mines of Phandelver, she fought with him before leaving.
- After accepting his offer to join The Iron Gauntlet officially, Opal trained with him, Gatura and Dadalan. This culminated in a sparring match in which she succeeded, however Daran's distant congratulations left Opal much to be desired.
- The Black Spider, headless yet still moving, attacked The Maw on their way to Neverwinter while they traveled with a band of performers and bards. It desperately wanted his head back from Vogen and murdered several performers before knocking him out and taking back his head.
- In Vallaki, The Maw uncovers Henrik Van Der Voort, the coffin-maker's plot to coerce Milivoj to steal the bones for him. When we sought to take them back, a fire broke loose in Henrik's coffin shop and the fight flooded into the streets. The Guards came racing to assist only for Strahd to appear, demolish many of the guardsmen and steal Vogen as a hostage.
- Opal is mortally wounded in Berez. She is left with a mania from touching the other side and ceases to care about anyone around her. She sustained a broken horn, bloodshot eye and massive scarring over her chest and torso. When she is cured, the memories flood back and she has a nervous breakdown.
- Ismark is slain in Kresk after Strahd invades and steals Ireena.
- Opal was fooled by Ol' Crimmage who turned out to be the Arcanoloth in disguise. He charmed her and persuaded her into handing over the Diary of Strahd she obtained from Barovia. He then vanished, taking her precious relic with him.
Mental Trauma
Opal's trauma began at a young age; her obvious bloodline sabotage any acknowledgement leading her to develop an inferiority complex at a young age.
By the middle of her teenager years, her skin had become thicker and she had over-corrected this and became rather fiery. In particular, she was especially cold towards the visitors of Candlekeep; the trainee squires, guardsmen and merchant assistants often objectified or dismissed her for her race and thus she learned to hardly ever trust any genuine affection towards her. Her only brush with ardor was a brief and fleeting moment with Killian, a childhood friend, before he suddenly disappeared to chase his dreams.
Opal carried on, becoming stronger as she grew but many traumatic events have happened during her travels with The Maw:
The Death of Gobnak
- Gobnak, Opal's original traveling companion died during their travels in finding the Spellforge.
- While travelling to the Vistani Camp to speak with Madam Eva, Opal envisioned herself hanging from a dead willow.
- While staring vacantly into a mirror in the Wizards of Winery family home, Strahd appeared behind Opal to scare her.
- Opal is killed during the battle with Baba Lysaga. She was resurrected but not without sustaining some mania.
- In Kresk, Opal finds Ismark's body impaled on his own sword and desicrated with many iron pokers in the Abbot's temple. She touches a bloodstain on the wall and has a vision of his bloody murder.
- When searching for the lost child of the Wizard of Winery family, The Maw finds him already turned. Uri performs a mercy killing and Opal leaves the room, unable to watch.
- When the Abbot cures Opal's mania, the emotions of all the shocking things instantly flood back to her and she breaks down on the floor.
- Within the Amber Castle, Opal wakes to Ezmerelda's dead body on the ground beside her. Vogen, bewitched by the Arcananloth, was coerced into silently killing her.
- That night, as Ezmerelda lay dying, Opal dreamed of Candlekeep burning and all she loved within it dying.
- Emil betrays The Maw and attacked Opal, biting a deep wound into her neck and shoulder.
- Ezmerelda and Diane Keaton to be slaughtered again by Strahd.
- The Maw battle Strahd. He bites Opal during the battle, leaving a puncture wound on her neck.
- The Maw find an old evil set free within the Mines of Phandelver. Amidst the chaos, they find a massive cathedral filled with skinned corpses at an alter. Gatura was nearly killed and The Maw was nearly destroyed by a giant fish-like being.
Intellectual Characteristics
Opal is a cerebral woman; she thinks logically and deeply about anything before acting. She is sharp with her words and only chooses to speak when it is necessary. This can change when she is flustered, embarrassed or angry - her emotions take hold of her intellect and all thoughts are muddled causing her to stutter, trip over words and rant.
Morality & Philosophy
Opal was original quite black and white with her morality; do good things to help good people. However, in her travels outside Candlekeep she has come to know the grayness of many situations and shifted her alignment. Her sense of justice has strengthen and Opal now regards every situation differently but generally believes that if peace can be achieved without fighting it should be the path taken. If action is needed, it must be to defend those needing protection and slay those who only seek to kill and destroy.

An Arrow-Laden Arrival in Phandalin
Year of Woe, 1491 DR
Many months ago, I left Candlekeep, thanks to an academic pilgrimage from my late master Angmar Anoram. Before this moment I found myself begrudgingly doing many odd jobs in order to make as much distance between me and my former home as possible. I want to make something of myself in spite of my infernal heritage. I will prove wrong all who doubted me and all who saw me as inferior. No matter what it takes.
Pressing forth, I found myself in a small wagon on a road to the small town of Phandalin to assist an enterprising dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker. He contracted me in Neverwinter, seeking a mage to help him advance his knowledge of some relics he wished to find. Naturally, this job was made for me so I agreed. Unfortunately I did not realize this job would include being saddled with an idiotic stump of a man named Gobnak who Gundren also employed. Are they brothers? Cousins, perhaps? They are both dwarves so it may be possible. Either way, I detest the names he calls me, like "smelly lizard", but I will pay no mind to his insults as he is just one more person I will prove wrong.
We both traveled together whilst transporting a caravan full of provisions and supplies from Neverwinter to Phandalin. As he drove, I stayed in the back with the tools and rations. I'd rather the sound of boxes knocking against each other than brave another one of the dwarf's incessant tales. We were to meet Gundren and his brothers, Tharden and Nundro, in the small hamlet to begin the enterprise.
Close to the end of our journey, about a half-day's march from Phandalin, we come across a decimated wagon; the cart torn apart and the horses dead and arrow-laden upon the ground. These are clearly Gundren and his escort, Sildar Hallwinter's horses. No sign of either men, though. As Gobnak investigated the scene, I perched herself upon our own vehicle and watched from afar. The dwarven monk found Gundren's map case laying upon the ground, without it's contents.
Before he could return to me a sudden ambush of goblins appeared. We fought them off until they retreated into back hills. Prior to this I had not seen real battle before, but I am proud to say I held my own against the disgusting, little creatures. Unsure of what to do next, Gobnak and I took up what is left of our employer's belongings and retreated back to Phandalin. We needed to know if Gundren and Sildar had made it back safely.
We were met in Phandalin by Elmar Barthen, proprietor of Barthen's Provisions and old friend of Gundren Rockseeker. He is an aging, slender, human man with a bald head and calloused hands. He informed us that Gundren never make it to Phandalin, and neither did Sildar Hallwinter. Panic sets in since the goblin attacks seem wide spread in the surrounding area and very few people survive the onslaughts. Barthen begged us to look into the whereabouts of Gundren and Sildar. Gobnak and I, of course, volunteered to find them.
Outside, I spied a raven-haired elf leaning against the outside of the shop, eavesdropping on my conversation. He was tall and muscular despite being so slender. Long, midnight hair flowed from his head and was tied behind him. He wore leathers over his bronze skin and a bow lay strapped to his back next to a quiver of arrows. "Be more subtle when you eavesdrop on, elf" I hissed at him. Cooley, the elf replied, "I will do as I wish. Besides, you sound like you need help and I just so happen to be looking for a job". Before I could bite back Barthen interjected, suggested the elf join Opal and Gobnak since he seemed like a skilled tracker. Despite my internal objections, Barthen was right, he did seem able enough to find our missing employers. The elf introduces himself as Vogen and Barthen vows to pay each of us 10 gold each for his friend's safe return.
After a night of much needed rest in the local inn, Vogen assisted us in tracking the goblins back to a hideout. We took him back to the scene we came across on the road from Neverwinter. The horses were still there, slowly decaying. Around them now lay several goblin corpses and fresher pools of red blood. Vogen, who seemed to have an extreme hate for goblins in particular, was able to conclude that these goblins were from a nearby cluster called the Cragmaw Tribe. He said that from his previous exploits around Phandalin he was able to deduce that the horde lived of the ease of plundering traffic moving along the Triboar Trail or the path to Phandalin. Their leader is a bugbear named Klarg.
Vogen tracked the few goblins who escape our clutches to a cave. Inside we made our way in the dark, slaying goblins behind Vogen until we found Klarg. After besting him in combat he admitted he had orders from the chief of the Cragmaws to waylay the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker and anyone traveling with him. Vogen slayed him where he stood. I am disturbed by his particular lust for green-skin blood. What happened to him that he should become so brutal?
Eventually, we found a badly injured Sildar Hallwinter. He was a human male of about 50 years, but despite his age he looked strong and stout. Blood covered his forehead and his body had been bound still with rudimentary shackles. We broke his bonds and asked him what happened. Sildar, still able to stand despite his ordeal, told us that Gundren and his brothers discovered a famous lost mine in Phandalin and seek to restore it to it's former glory. The endeavor was lucrative but dangerous as many people would vie for what he sought. Unfortunately, Sildar knew only that Gundren and his map have been taken to somewhere called "Cragmaw Castle."
Knowing there was little else in this secluded camp, we took Sildar back to Phandalin and put him to rest at the Stonehill Inn, run by Toblin Stonehill. As he rested Toblin informed us that the small town of Phandalin has many more problems than we expected.
Downtime After the Black Spider
Year of Woe, 1491 DR
In the weeks following the demise of the Black Spider, the group all enjoyed a small respite in Phandalin.
Barry left to pursue his faith further. Arvard spent some time as a civilian. Vogen retreated into the forest and meditated. Cu spent time milling about with Qellin and attempted to strike up business deals with enterprises in Phandalin. I don't think any took the bait though.
As for myself, I'd rather die than talk to Daran again, so I spent most days rising early to go work with Gundren in Wave Echo Cave.
The Forge of Spells is a rather peculiar item. To my understanding it was built by the Phandelver's Pact, a collective of humans, dwarves and gnomes who wished to utilize this mine and magic to enchant weapons and armor as a business. Upon first look it seems like a large workshop with a massive stone pedestal in the middle of the room. A small brazier is perched atop it and it's ever-glowing fire crackles with green, glowing flames. Gundren tells me that once at item is tempered in it's fires it is imbued with supernatural powers. Gundren wishes me to study it with him, and I will oblige.
A Celebration to Remember
Year of Woe, 1491 DR
The Black Spider is dead; the Redbrands, defeated and Phandalin saved.
To commemorate this momentous occasion, a huge celebration was to be held in the Stonehill Inn. Toblin would supply the space and basic brews while Daran supplied hard cider from the Edermath Orchard. All the town would come, bringing food for feasting and instruments for making music.
As the townsfolk danced, drank and filled their bellies, Barry regaled the children of Phandalin with stories of heroism from his childhood. A teetotal, he did not drink a single sip of ale and instead preferred to take the opportunity to inspire the next generation to follow in the footsteps of the heroes of old. After the party had dulled down, he picked up his new friend's lost clothing upon strewn about the hallway and hung them up on their doorknobs as he made his way back to bed alone. The next morning he woke up, had an early breakfast and prayed.
Arvard drank his fill and displayed his masterful swordplay by allowing villagers to hurl fruit and food his way so he could slice them with his blade before they would hit the ground. Between impressing the townsfolk and downing beer he flirted tirelessly with the beautiful, redheaded barmaid he had his eye on prior to leaving on our adventure. Sometime after midnight he disappeared with her to the darkness of his inn room. The following morning he slept in with his new lady friend and enjoyed a rest after such a heavy ordeal.
Cu Culain mesmerized the crowd with his musical prowess and led the song and dance. He eyed the sweet widow, Qellin, and spent most of the night dancing with her. After a while, Qellin asked another village mother to take care of her son that night and allowed Cu to sweep her off her feet. He followed her back to her home where he spent the night there. In the morning he woke to her making him breakfast. He stayed with her during the morning and returned to his friends much later.
Vogen drank a plenty in the corner of the inn pub. His brooding charm intrigued one of the bartenders and a barmaid. Unlike his usual self, he invited them into conversation which led to a very subtle, yet effective, seduction. Both barmaid and tender quietly slipped away to his room and shared his bed that night. In the morning, even Vogen was surprised at how chaotic his tryst turned out. His room was in absolute shambles; both lovers were still naked and passed out at the foot and head of his bed. The man was fast asleep in a half-eaten cake and the woman was cuddling up to the carcass of a roasted chicken. Food, cups and plates were thrown around the floor amidst puddles of wine and food. Leaving the two to sleep, he cleaned himself up, dressed and went to fetch some water. On his way there he heard Opal throwing up and offered her a glass. She accepted and he returned to attend to those still sleeping in his bed.
Opal, began the night shyly flirting with Daran while slowly getting more and more inebriated. For once, she let a little loose and allowed herself to embrace the party. She danced and let loose a thaumatergy spell, lighting the room with iridescent sparkles and strobes. Opal made passes at Daran, who politely rebuffed her out of respect for her person, but she ultimately prevailed when she left the party, walked upstairs and threw her outer robe to the ground. Daran, unable to hold back further, downed his drink and followed her into her room. The next morning, Opal woke alone in her bed with a pounding headache. A note, written by Daran was left on her bedside. It read that Daran accepted that sometimes you just need to live in the moment and he wished to respect her once again. He again wished to see her about the Iron Gauntlet soon. Opal, slightly disappointed, hid the note and vowed to forget about the night before lest she embarrass herself for a man again. Vogen knocked on her door with a glass of water. She accepted and crawled back into bed to sleep off her hangover.
A Death in the Family
Year of Woe, 1491 DR
The party has defeated the Black Spider, but unfortunately lost one of their own. Gobnak perished during the battle. Despite Opal detesting that sad, drunk, mindless idiot, the death of someone so close shook her. He was also the person she had been traveling with the longest. Mortality was now very real to her.
They buried Gobnak respectfully and took a few days rest to recover.
During this time they met Cu Culain, a human bard and wanderer. Intrigued by the party, he agreed to come with them on their travels and make songs from their adventures.
A Request from The Iron Gauntlet
Year of Woe, 1491 DR
Opal had met Daran Edermath at the beginning of her time in Phandalin. He is the owner of the Edermath apple orchard on the outskirts of Phandalin. Through their discussions she finds out he was once an adventurer of great renowned. He traveled with The Order of the Iron Gauntlet for many years around the Dragon Coast before settling down in Phandalin after an incident he is reluctant to mention.
Opal was originally flustered by the handsome elf as she was expecting the farmer to be an elderly man. Instead she saw a fit, silver-haired half-elf chopping wood in the high, midday sun. She is also unsure of how to react to his kindness, helpfulness and genuinely good nature, as she has been more accustomed to poor treatment most of her life. On the oddest of occasion she had received some compliments from him and even delved slightly into flirtation territory which only serves to embarrass and confuse the tiefling more.
Upon arriving back from slaying the Black Spider, Daran reveals he is a member of the Order of the Gauntlet, a devout and vigilant group that seeks to protect others from the depredations of evildoers. The order is always vigilant, ready to smite evil, enforce justice, and enact retribution against any who try to subjugate or harm others. Though he is no longer active in the order, he urges both Opal to join as he believes she exemplifes all the virtues of the order, such as honor and vigilance.
Opal, honored by the offer, agrees to one day take him up on it.
Wave Echo Cave
Year of Woe, 1491 DR
Gundren, delighted to know that his map had been recovered explained to the party that the location of the mines were lost five hundred years ago during orc invasions that devastated the area, located a days walk from Phandalin. In the centuries since, countless prospectors and adventurers have searched for the lost mine, but none succeeded until the Rockseeker brothers found the entrance a month ago. Unfortunately, the Rockseekers did not realize they were being trailed by spies working for Nezznar, the Black Spider, and they inadvertently led the drow villain to the Forge of Spells.
The Black Spider had killed both Gundren's brother and cousin in order to take the mine's secrets for himself, but Gundren does not want their deaths to be in vein. He gave the party the map and asked them to bring The Black Spider to justice. Sildar echoed his friend's wishes and asked the group to bring Nezznar here alive.
Following Gundren Rockseeker's map to the lost mine, the party discovers the cavern is now overrun by undead and strange monsters. It is clear the drow is searching for the Forge of Spells but his search has been hindered by the many creatures living inside.
Soon, they catch up to him and his loyalest followers. A battle ensues, raging down many of the maze-like caverns of the mines until it spills out onto a rocky outcrop that descends into a massive crater. There is an old narrow bridge suspended over it and eventually the party fights The Black Spider over it. He is pushed from the cavern and falls down onto the hard rocks below.
Amazingly, he is not dead, but barely alive. He agrees to be put on trail, as per Sildar's wishes but Vogen, Gobnak and Arvard are adamant that he must die here. Despite Opal and Barry's objections, Arvard strikes out and decapitates The Black Spider before the rest of his party. Opal screams at her party member's, exclaiming that this is vigilantism, not justice. Vogen bags his head and sighs that not everyone can be brought to justice.
The group ventures home and shows Sildar the head. Disappointed, yet relieved it is over, Sildar accepts the Black Spider's death and rewards the adventurers handsomely.
Opal is allowed to keep Glasstaff's Staff of Defense and the Black Spider's Spider Staff.
