Griffon

Griffons are intelligent avian creatures that feature the body of a lion, but the head, wings, and forelegs of an eagle. They are strong and have keen eyesight, hunting in small prides over plains, forests, or cliffs. The griffon's preferred meal is horses, but they are also willing to eat anything with meat. Griffons tend to make their nests in high, rocky, clifftop aeries, using sticks, leaves, and bones. They remain in their nests until the food in the area has been exuasted, at which point they move to a new area and build a new nest.

While griffons are wild creatures, it is possible to tame them. A griffon raised from hatching can bond with a single master for life, but the process of training it is expensive (in both food and time) and dangerous. However, a bonded and trained griffon will fight to the death to protect its rider. Notably, the Griffon Cavalry of Waterdeep employs the creatures to serve as flying mounts for soldiers.
