Lantan
Lantan is an island nation located in the Trackless Sea, north of the Chultan peninsula. It is notable for its advanced technology and worship of Gond. Lantan consists of three separate, rocky islands covered in jungle and stone pinnacles. The settlements of Lantan are typically built high above the ground and jungle canopy, but many fishing and farming communities also exist. The primary inhabitants of the islands are humans and rock gnomes. The item that most people associate with Lantan is smokepowder, a powder that violently combusts when ignited, but Lantan also exports many other kinds of technology to the rest of Faerûn.
History
Lantan began trading with the wider world around the 8th century DR, selling lesser inventions in exchange for rare goods. Before the banning of gunpowder by Gond, the Lantanese had begun experiments with creating artillery using the substance. During the Time of Troubles in 1358 DR, the now-mortal Gond washed up on the shores of Lantan. As thanks for the people of Lantan sheltering him, he revealed the secrets of smokepowder and firearms to them.
When the Spellplague struck Toril in 1385 DR, mass tectonic shifts caused multiple tsunamis to strike Lantan. At the same time, all of the smokepowder and magical reagants stored on Lantan simultaneously combusted, severely damaging large parts of the country. The tsunamis struck Lantan simultaneously with the blue flame, and most of the country was suddenly transported to Abeir. What remained in Toril was destroyed by the flooding, and much of the advanced technology of Lantan was sunk beneath the sea. While Lantan was in Abeir, the waters around the islands on Toril were said to be haunted by a sea monster that destroyed any ship that approached, but this has never been conclusively proven.
Lantan returned in 1487 DR, and its ships returned to plying the seas of the Sword Coast. Those that trade with Lantan report that the returned country is now much more secretive and technologically advanced.
