RoT 12: “Back to Waterdeep”

Life, Achievement/ Win

2020-09-18

The treasure hordes of Arahthator have been located and efforts started to get them gathered together. Now all you have to do is report to the Council of Waterdeep.

Having counted the treasure horde of Arauthator, you make your way back to the top of the iceberg to inform the Ice Hunter villages that they are free. As proof you bring them the dragon’s head. Being the Iron Company, this is done with much flair using Levitate and Tenser’s Floating Disk to rise from below in grand fashion with a little Thaumaturgy and Minor Illusion thrown in to make the wind blow and torches flair for dramatic effect.

The Ice Hunters are beyond grateful, falling to their knees in thanks and preparing a feast of they choicest selections of slightly spoiled fish and other seafoods. Pubert, at his request, is given one of their finest hunting wolves.

Word is sent via the Diplomat’s Pouch with how much there is to be gathered including the libraries and all the treasure (never mind that the gems and jewelry are safely in Malice’s Bag of Holding and are collectively probably worth more than all the coin). You leave Maccath and Makulb in charge of coordinating the Kobolds and gathering everything together in preparation for the fleet being sent by the Council of Waterdeep – a task that they both insist upon overseeing anyway. You leave behind a bright orange flag flying atop the iceberg so the fleet can spot it easier and bid farewell after a few days to your new friends (Maccath even gives Malice a kiss on the cheek to say goodbye).

The trip aboard Frostskimmr to Waterdeep takes about a fortnight but is uneventful. You even pass the treasure fleet heading the opposite direction. You arrive in Waterdeep’s Great Harbor and as a thank you invite Captain Larustah and his crew to a meal at a nearby tavern where 300 gp is spent on food and drink and some new game Pubert and Rikon help invent involving chugging from a cup after the opposing side throws a small ball into it.

You make your way back to Piergeiron’s Palace where Chauncey, your ever-doting chamberlain is pleased to see you. He draws baths for you each, summons a groomer for Pubert’s Hunting Wolf, and informs Brehana a special item arrived for her and is awaiting in her personal chamber.

He also presents you with a letter from a local Inn Keep named Mado Cottook who has requested the honor of having you at his establishment, The Broken Blade, for dinner. The timing of the letter, coupled with you not knowing the person who reportedly sent it, not to mention the distance it is from the Palace raises suspicion immediately. You have Chauncey find out more about this person and place before accepting. Meanwhile Malice goes shopping and orders a new hat to match his boots – a White Dragon Scale Fedora of Mending. He also has the white dragon tooth he took from Arauthator sculpted into a longsword, also with a Mending enchantment.

Upon Malice’s return Chauncey informs you all that Mado Cottook seems legitimate. He is a retired Alchemist who opened The Inn of the Broke Blade in the North Ward about two years ago. He’s already RSVP’d on your behalf (assuming you would have said to do so) and ordered a carriage for you since it is several miles away. He also lets you know that your return the city has naturally resulted in there being a meeting of the Council to be called and all the member are expected to be assembled within the next two or three days.

You arrive at the Broken Blade and are greeted enthusiastically by Mado who prepares a special table for you in a part of the dining area not occupied by anyone else. The other side of the dining room is occupied by a pair of scholars (and Elf and a Halfling discussing some piece of lore), two merchants (a female Halfling and a male Elf apparently discussing business) and a female halfling soldier sitting by herself. Mado, for his hospitality, though seems to be surprised by your visit as though he was unaware that you were coming.

As the evening goes on, the food and drink are quite good. The other patrons eventually shuffle out and Mado excuses himself to go to the back to fetch more ale.

It is at that point that the door is suddenly kicked in and the window nearest you shatters as a group of people come smashing into the building. They are all clearly members of the Cult of the Dragon including a Blue Half-Dragon and a Young Blue Dragon (outside). The Cult has sent an assassin squad after you!
