Expedition
Now that you have the Wrymspeaker known as Varram the White, all you have to do is figure out how to turn him over to the Council and still make it north to find the Draakhorn.
You make your way out of the Tomb of Diderius and leave behind the Yuan-Ti that had taken Varram captive, with him now in your charge but still unconscious. You had been told their magics had suspended his soul, but it would return once outside their demesne.
Once clear of of the ruins a fair bit, Malice ritually casts detect magic and determines there is no spell on Varram – he was simply beaten senseless. Brehanna revives him with cure wounds.
Surprisingly, Varram, who was a Wrymspeaker in the Cult of the Dragon , is more than willing to talk provided that you take him somewhere safe as he knows Severin , the Cult’s leader, will undoubtedly have him killed for losing the White Dragon Mask. He tried to find it, which was why he was in the Serpent Hills, but was woefully unsuccessful. He’s fairly sure the Cult has already recovered it and knows Severin will be furious with him.
Since he’s willing, Malice is able to use the Scroll of Teleport to Luskan you were given before leaving Waterdeep . You arrive on the docks, where you are almost immediately approached by a human male with the left half of his face horribly scarred. He introduces himself as Lerustah, Captain of the Frostskimmr. He and his crew stand ready to take you into the Sea of Moving Ice in search of Oyaviggaton, the ice berg/island controlled by the White Dragon Arauthator and believed to be the location of the Draakhorn.
Lerusah also presents you with a small satchel and explains that it is a Diplomat’s Pouch. If you place a letter in the pouch addressed to someone who also has a DIPLOMAT’S POUCH , it will disappear and appear in their pouch. The letter currently inside explains how it works. Malice takes immediate advantage of this to let the Council know that you have Varram in custody but need someone to see him to Waterdeep. You receive a response that Riffolk Thawe, a human and commander of the locale Order of the Gauntlet outpost in Luskan will be dispatched post-haste.
Riffolk arrives to take custody of Varram and chastises him as Varram accuses you of threatening to take his fingers. “The Iron Company is of the upmost reputation and honor. Stop your lies!”, says Riffolk as he cuffs Varram on the ear for daring accuse you of such things. He and Rikon also exchange what is obviously strained greetings before Riffolk and his men take Varram away.
The next morning you set sail aboard the Frostskimmr with Captain Lerustah (known as “Half-Face”) and his crew of 40 and plunge north into the Sea of Moving Ice.
As you get north of Icewind Dale it becomes bitterly cold and you are thankful for the provided cold weather gear. Rikon mostly complains about the cold and spends much of his time being sea sick and miserable.
The Captain warns to keep a sharp eye as the northern seas are treacherous, not only due to ice but dangerous creatures both on the water and on the massive ice drifts. In fact, the ship is attacked shortly after getting into the Sea of Moving Ice by a group of fishlike creatures called Merrow, who attempt to swamp the boat spilling many of the crew as well as Malice, Brehana, and Rikon overboard into the frigid water. Thankfully, all three manage to pull themselves back into the boat with the help of the crew members that didn’t go overboard. The Merrow are no pushovers but you still manage to deal with them fairly quickly, Rickon vowing to have fish for dinner for dumping him into the water.
