DIT 9: "Regroup and Re-strategize"

Discovery, Exploration

2022-03-18

You have some idea now of where to look for ways into the Phylactery Vault but first, after a series of battles with undead and sahuagin, you must first revisit the Gatehouse to rest and rethink how best to proceed.

You return to the Gatehouse to rest and re-examine the map you have of the Doomvault to weigh your options against it and the information you’ve gotten form the Sea Hag. Syranna understands your need to rest from time to time but admonishes you that each time out exit and re-enter the Doomvault the chances that Sass Tam and his minions will be alerted to your presence.

You return to the Abyssal Prisons where you previously met Pencheska, the succubus imprisoned by the demilich, Tarul Var and where you picked up your fire elemental friend that has been following you around like a lost puppy – affectionately referred to as “George”. From here you find a chamber that contains an enormous elemental rift, which “George” uses to return to his own plane as he, apparently, waves goodbye.

Continuing, you find a menagerie of trapped demons being looked after by a Red Wizard and his apprentice, along with a deathlock wight. Easily dispatching the apprentice and wight, the Red Wizard, who calls himself Barry quickly surrenders. Upon questioning him, you find that he knows nothing of how to find the way into the Phylactery Vault but can describe the workings of what he calls the “Maze of Undoing” which is designed to trap demons. He also gives you the password for it, although he explains that that only allows for demons to use the entry and exit points to leave the maze. Non-demons need not use the password as they can move through the entry and exit points freely.

After dispatching Barry, as he’s not to be trusted, you find the maze he spoke of to familiarize yourself with it since it contains a Black Gate. While doing so, you find a trapped demon known as a glabrezu which attacks you from the ceiling while using the strange gravity effects of the maze. Unfortunately for it, the demon is no match for the Iron Company and is soon destroyed despite attempting to use a confusion spell against you.
