Expedition
Having turned Varram over to the Order of the Gauntlet in Luskan, you board the Frostskimmr, a light longship built for cutting through the ice and plunge northward in search of Arcane Brotherhood researcher Maccath the Red. Hopefully she knows where to find the Draakhorn.
Life on the Sea of Moving Ice is some of the roughest conditions you have had to deal with on this quest to end the Cult of the Dragon. You find yourself almost wishing for the mud and rain when you did caravan duty from Baldur’s Gate to Waterdeep. At least it was warm!
That’s the worst part – the bitter cold! Or is it the fact that the sea moves and makes the boat rock causing a constant feeling of wanting to throw up?
This morning you had to deal with a group of Merrow. At least the battle warmed you up some but it certainly opened your eyes to having to keep your eyes open out here.
And lo and behold, more Merrow after lunch! These you repel much faster having figured out their weaknesses. You just wish you could find site of Oyaviggaton already. Frostskimmer is a fine ship but it being a long boat, there is not a lower deck to hunker down in.
After a full day of sailing (or rowing would be more accurate) northward, Captain Lerustah finally decides it is getting too close to dark to continue. He orders the boat to beach on a large ice float, the crew picking it up out of the water entirely and setting it on its flat bottom directly onto the ice float.
You disembark and start some campfires for warmth and to cook your unusually large supply of fish filets. But before you can really enjoy your meal you discover another danger of the Sea of Moving Ice as you are suddenly attacked by Scrags – otherwise known as aquatic Trolls. Having dealt with their swamp cousins before you know about their regenerative abilities and are able to deal with them fairly quickly.
Finally, after a hard day at sea you get a good night’s sleep. You almost dread getting back in the boat the next morning, but the mission must be completed.
Thankfully, about mid-morning there is a shout from one of the crew members. They have spotted a huge iceberg on the horizon. There is no doubt as it comes into view that this must be Oyaviggaton.
The portion of the berg above the water appears roughly triangular, with rounded corners. The plateau portion of the iceberg rises more than a hundred feet above the water, and the jagged ice peaks add another two hundred feet above that.
There is a large shelf of ice where you see several small boats beached the Captain says must belong to Ice Hunters. An ice chasm splits the cliff face above the ice shelf, rising to the top of the plateau. The chasm is 20 feet wide near the bottom but narrows to 5 feet wide at the top. Steps are cut into the ice, making for an easy climb to the top of the plateau.
