That Maiden's hand is an escape, my child. Though it doesn't mean you have to take it... heh heh heh.
When a soldier falls in battle, but are still clinging to life, they are visited by the Maiden. It is said that they can watch her walk across the battlefield, completely ignored by everyone still fighting. She will find the injured, crouch down at their side, and offer her hand. If you take that hand, it is not your body that she helps to its feet but your soul. As she helps your soul to its feet, she releases it from your body, allowing them both to rest.
Some soldiers, regardless of the Titan they believe in, will pray to the Maiden before battle. They believe her mercy is better than the grevious wounds they would suffer if they were to survive the ensuing fray. To others, the Maiden represents weakness. People from
Snorjoro will actively put down the Maiden, arguing that standing up and continuing to fight for the death is more honourable than accepting her mercy.
In truth, the Maiden's existence is debated. Anyone in the position to have seen her, has never lived to tell the tale. So perhaps she's nothing more than a coping mechanism.
