Piper Ragland

Piper is a young woman of seventeen who lived in the village of Reen, at the edge of the Selune's Grove. She is easily recognizable by her tall, pointed straw hat, curly red hair, and crystal necklace—her arcane focus. Piper is a country hedge mage, well respected by the people of Reen. She often entertains children at festivals and market days by conjuring motes of flame or bouquets of flowers, and she helps the adults in town by supplying them with sleeping tonics and preventatives. Piper is a clever woman—one of the few literate people in town—but she feels inadequate compared to her late master, her grandmother. Her grandmother was a master alchemist that lived in Winterfar before retiring to Reen following the death of Piper's parents and subsequent adoption of Piper. Despite Piper’s self-doubt, she is beloved by the townsfolk, who are simply happy to have a real wizard in their midst! Following the destruction of Reen, Piper moved to Mythshire. Offered a patronage by Countess Mythshire, Piper strives to prove and improve her skills in both magic and alchemy.

Personal history

Piper grew up in Riverfront as the only child of a small shipping merchant and his wife. When she was 10 years old her parents fell sick and soon died of disease, after which she went to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother was a renowned alchemist and proficient mage that lived in Winterfar, and upon adopting Piper she decided to retire and move to the small rural town of Reen. Piper took some time to adjust to her situation, but once she was thirteen, she started to apprentice to her grandmother who had taken on the role of town healer. Unfortunately, within the year that she began her apprenticeship her grandmother passed away from old age and she was once again on her own. She had learned the basics of non-magical alchemy and had mastered a few cantrips in her time apprenticed to her grandmother, and despite her young age the town began to look to her to fill the now empty role. Her warm and personable demeanor, not to mention the debt they felt towards her grandmother, had much of the town eager to come together to support her once she was on her own. She is well loved, and her abilities are respected, though Piper feels overshadowed by the memory of her grandmother's talents. Self-conscious about her own skill, Piper is eager to prove herself to somebody not as easily impressed as rural townsfolk
