Sova publishes Spirits: The Reality of a Metaphysical World, which begins her descent into academic ridicule.

Sova took a few years after returning from the north to research before publishing. In this book, she compiled stories about spirits, angels, celestials, psychopomps, and related beings and then concluded with her experience of seeing one in the north. The thesis of the book was that there are too many similar descriptions of spiritual beings from too diverse cultures to be merely based on chance. Her own sighting of a Spirit was the clincher of her theory, proving - at least to her - that some sort of metaphysical being exists in the world.   Her theories were laughed at, and generally used as proof that she was losing her grip. Her husband Kal's insistence that he saw the Spirit, too, were ignored on the basis that a husband would say anything to defend his wife and that he didn't have an academic education, so his opinion was invalid.
