Session 8: The Fatal Frost Report
General Summary
Shava unlocked the door to the mysterious room, and the party entered Belak’s office. Lots of scrolls, texts and books were found, including Belak’s journals about his activities in the Sunless Citadel during recent years. Erky also found a fascinating tome for himself. Feeling relatively safe thanks to the locked room, the heroes settled in for the night and made plans for their next move before going to sleep.
3 Flamerule, 1393 DR (Day 4)
In the morning, Shava was feeling a bit left out, since Pock and Norg found cool scrolls among the Outcast’s belongings and she wasn’t able to obtain anything useful. She decided to take another deep look into Belak’s bookshelves, and was indeed rewarded with a fine-looking black leather bound tome. However, immediately after she excitedly started going through it, an arcane trap was triggered, exploding in the elf’s hand and dealing considerable damage to everyone around. Note taken, and the book was carefully, but decisively shoved into a backpack. Before heading back to the upper level, there were a few areas left to explore. First, they found a cave room with a few giant rat nests surrounding a bigger bedroll, but no one in sight currently using them. There was another point of interest in the room in the form of a small tunnel, where only the smallest members of the group could fit through. So one end of a 50ft rope was tied around Pock so he could explore where the passage would lead to. Unfortunately, the rope ran out before the gnome could reach anything notably meaningful. It was decided that investigating the tunnel further would be too dangerous and the party continued their exploration of the lower level. Cora, Pock and Norg decided to wait in the entrance room while Hedid, Shava and Thorbjörn checked out the final passage. Thorbjörn soon joined the waiting room very quickly after Shava discovered an example of his greatest fear in one of the areas – a fire SNAKE’s nest. The nest inhabitant itself was nowhere to be seen and no hostile action was initiated. The last room still left to check contained a cool dragon statue holding a healing potion and elaborate wall carvings, but nothing else of interest. Now it was time to head back to the upper level. Hedid had some difficulties transporting Sharwyn’s unconscious body up the well, while Thorbjörn confidently scaled the walls carrying sir Braford’s. The first one to reach the goblins’ throne room in the upper level was Pock, and there he saw the inhabitants of the nests and bedroll discovered earlier – a bugbear commanding three giant rats. He gloated about being the new leader of the tribe before initating combat. Things quickly turned even worse when it became clear that Calcryx the white dragon wyrmling had also been released from her room and entered the fight! The battle was extremely tasking to the already worn-out party, but they still managed to hold their own. Unfortunately, the flying dragon’s abilities proved fatal to Norg who managed to climb halfway up the well, but was knocked unconscious by Calcryx’ icy breath and did not survive the fall to the ground... Soon after, Hedid managed to furiously decapitate the dragon, and Thorbjörn kicked the bugbear down the well, who was added to the pile of corpses below. A victory was won, but at a terrible cost – the life of one of their comrades. Thorbjörn engineered an elaborate solution for single-handedly transporting the remains of both Norg and sir Braford back to Oakhurst. The party had no good news to share with Yusdrayl and the kobolds, but they still made an audience to give a report of recent events. Some details were left out, for example the fact about chopping off the head of the kobolds’ precious dragon. The heroes also bought the dragon key from Yusdrayl. It was time to head back out to daylight and towards Oakhurst. Leaving the fortress was uneventful, and so was the first half of the way back to town. However as evening approached, suddenly the unconscious bodies of sir Braford and Sharwyn woke up for a moment with a sheer look of terror in their eyes, after which their eyes closed never to open again. The last members of their adventuring group were now dead.. With that unfortunate news, the heroes reached Oakhurst within the late hours of the night. They delivered the news along with the body of Sharwyn to her mother, who had no choice but to accept the fact that her children could not be returned alive. Kerowyn still rewarded the party as promised. After heading to the Old Boar Inn, everyone took a moment to toast and honor the memory of their fallen comrade Norg, including Erky, who after the drink announced that he would be heading out to continue on his own path. Soon after, the heroes checked in for the night. New adventures await...Hedid Liadon
