Personal history
Sildar Hallwinter was born to a moderately wealthy family in the city of Waterdeep. Growing up, he always wanted to become a soldier, and after spending time in the city watch he was admitted into the Griffon Cavalry, the city's famed air force. While serving in the force, Sildar became acquainted with members of the Lords' Alliance, and eventually became a member himself after leaving the Griffon Cavalry. Sildar travelled up and down the Sword Coast in his work for the organization, notably spending time in Neverwinter helping the city's Lord Protector, Dagult Neverember, to rebuild, where he became acquainted with fellow Lords' Alliance operative Iarno Albrek. Albrek later disappeared while on an assignment to the mining town of Phandalin, distressing the knight.
While in Neverwinter, Sildar met and befriended the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, who confided in the knight that he had located the legendary Wave Echo Cave and planned, along with his brothers, to renovate the mines. After relaying the information to his superiors in the Lords' Alliance, Sildar set out to escort the dwarf to Phandalin, a sleepy mining town close to the caves. Unfortunately, the pair were waylaid by goblins from the Cragmaw tribe and imprisoned.
Sildar was rescued from the goblins by another group of Gundren's hires - adventurers the dwarf had paid to escort some supplies. The adventurers struck a deal with one of the goblins to kill the lair's boss in exchange for Sildar, but when one of the adventurers moved to break the agreement, the goblin slit Sildar's throat. Fortunately the adventurers were able to get to Sildar before he perished, magically healing him, but his brush with death left a mark on the knight.
Travelling on to Phandalin, Sildar hired the adventurers to locate Gundren while he investigated the whereabouts of his old friend Iarno Albrek. After running afoul of the Redbrands gang a couple of times, his inquiries led to Iarno disappearing in the ruins of Tresendar Manor, and he once again implored the adventurers to investigate since he himself was still recovering from his ordeal with the goblins.
Unbeknownst to Sildar, Iarno had in fact abandoned his post in the Lords' Alliance and seized the opportunity to line his own pockets by forming the Redbrands. The adventurers, however, were able to put a stop to the wizard's scheme, and upon discovering his old friend's betrayal, Sildar simply gave Iarno a cold look before ignoring the mage altogether.
