Phandalin
Phandalin is a small town in the foothills of the Sword Mountains, south of Neverwinter Wood. After its destruction by orcs in 951 DR the town lay abandoned for centuries, but has been resettled by farmers and prospectors from Neverwinter and Waterdeep in recent years. With no formal governing body, the town has been plagued by bandits and thieves, and despite recent efforts by the Lords' Alliance and a group of adventurers to bring stability to the area, local gangs and goblin tribes still plague the town and its surroundings.
Demographics
The population of Phandalin is mostly human, with a few dwarves, elves and halflings dotted about. Most of the townsfolk work as prospectors in the Sword Mountains, though there are numerous farmers, woodworkers and traders in the town as well.
Government
Phandalin has no formal government, but the townsfolk anually elect a Townmaster, who serves as a judge and mediator, and keeps any records. The current Townmaster is Harbin Wester, a human banker.
The Lords' Alliance has made recent efforts to help the town, by sending agents to both establish proper defensive and judicial bodies and fund expeditions to help the town become more prosperous.
Defences
Phandalin has little in the way of defences and law enforcement. There is no organized militia or constabulary, and the town's isolation has made it easy prey for gangs of brigands harassing the town. However, the Townmaster contracts adventurers to deal with external threats, and any problems to the East are often dealt with by the neighbouring town of Triboar.
Guilds and Factions
The dominant group in Phandalin is the Redbrands, a gang of bandits that arrived two months ago. This group of thieves hassle most businesses in town, and are despised and feared by the townsfolk, particularly the Townmaster.
Several larger factions have attempted to gain a foothold in the town. The Lords' Alliance has sent agents to help bring law and order to the area, and it's rumored that the Zhentarim have also made efforts to bring the town under their sway.
History
Phandalin was originally a farming and mining community that prospered thanks to the rich mines and magical power of Wave Echo Cave. In 951 DR, however, orcs ravaged the North and laid waste to both the town and the mines. The town lay in ruins for centuries, until in the 1400s settlers from Waterdeep and Neverwinter began making moves to recolonise the area. By 1491 DR, the town is small, but stable, aided by the Lord's Alliance's efforts to help civilise the region.
