Nightmare

Nightmares are not the typical equine specters of folklore; they embody the darkest fears and anxieties of those who encounter them. These spectral beings take on various forms, often reflecting the nightmares of individuals in their vicinity. They thrive on the emotions of despair and dread, manifesting as twisted figures that embody the essence of one's deepest terrors.

When someone is touched or attacked by a nightmare and survives, they face a grim trial. They must grapple with the shadows that lie within themselves, confronting their fears head-on. If they succumb to these fears, they begin a dark transformation into @Night Touched —twisted, dark echoes of their former selves. Once human, these individuals become servants of Myrakka, Goddess of Darkness, no longer possessing their own will. They skulk through the night, carrying out her bidding, as they are now tied to the very shadows they once feared.

Interestingly, the appearance of nightmares in a region can often be foreshadowed by the sighting of a Death's Flutter. This distinct butterfly, marked with a skull pattern on its wings, emerges after sunset and signals the impending presence of nightmares. Those who notice this eerie omen would do well to prepare, for the night holds horrors that may soon come to life.
