Zephyr's Gate

"Walk upon the wind's edge"

History

Nestled at the bottom of the eastern continent, Zephyr's Gate is a vibrant city born from the resilient nomadic tribes who migrated down from the Dust Peaks. Once forgotten by the gods, these tribes forged a rich oral tradition, paying homage not to deities, but to their heroes and ancestors—honoring the greatest among them as Rishi or Saints. This reverence for the past is woven into the very fabric of the city, where tales of valor and wisdom echo through the streets.

The people of Zephyr's Gate share a deep connection with the beasts of the land, particularly the majestic griffins of the Dust Peaks. These revered creatures are not treated as mere beasts of burden but celebrated as partners in life and legend. Over the centuries, the city flourished, becoming a bustling hub of trade, thanks to its proximity to abundant gold mines and the silk produced in its verdant fields. The innovative spirit of its renowned academies has birthed remarkable inventions, including hot air balloons and zephyrs, further enhancing its status as a center of commerce and creativity.

During the Heavenly Clash, Zephyr's Gate cleverly sidestepped the devastation that ravaged much of the continent, emerging relatively unscathed. After the Sundering, its fortunate geological location, bordered by CinderMoore to the north and the Dust Peaks to the west, afforded it protection from the chaos that unfolded beyond its walls. However, this sanctuary was challenged by the Red Drake, a formidable beast seeking to reclaim its dominance after being driven from Cindermoore. With magic now gone, the only capable force in the land that could face the dragon was the Griffin Brigade. The ensuing battle was fierce, resulting in the loss of many villages, but under the leadership of the Gilded Rishi, the Griffin Brigade managed to outmaneuver the dragon. In a moment of cunning brilliance, the Rishi struck a devastating blow, blinding the dragon on one side and forcing it to retreat to the northern peaks of Shatterspine. Sadly, the Rishi perished from his wounds, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and sacrifice.

Now

Today, the people of Zephyr's Gate are self-reliant and courageous, though they have grown accustomed to a high standard of living. This has bred a class of spoiled nobles and academics who indulge in the pleasures of life—music, laughter, and the sweet aroma of hookahs wafting from homes and taverns. If given an excuse, someone from Zephyr's Gate is keen to put on their finest silk and perfume, and put scented oil upon their hair.

Positioned strategically to control trade routes between the central continent and the east, Zephyr's Gate thrives, with golden and silver coins known as lyra serving as the lifeblood of its economy. The city is governed by the Amir, a powerful family that has managed the city since before the sundering.
