Gaal Dornick of
Synnax .
She won a maths competition and solved the Abraxas Conjecture. She used
Kalle's Ninth Proof of Folding . She received an invitation to
Trantor by
Dr. Hari Seldon .
This allowed her to leave her homeworld where math and science were not only disallowed, but someone would be put to death for even talking about such things.
She met Dr. Hari Seldon, and found that he was not quite what she expected.
Upon arrival, Dr. Seldon told her that she would be arrested, along with himself.

Dornick enters a period of cryosleep beginning on 8.8.12068 EI.
She awakens from that sleep, 34 years, 223 days later, in the year 12102 EI.
During that time she finds out the she is on the ship
The Raven . She discovers that
Dr. Hari Seldon was killed by
Raych Foss and she herself was implicated in the murder. Foss was executed by being sent out into the vacuum of space.
After awakening and arguing with onboard Dr. Seldon's conscience, she leaves The Raven in the cryopod in which she arrived.
She sets the destination for Synnax in the
Blue Drift . The computer in the pod informs her it will take 138 years.
When she awakes, the year is now 12240 EI.
She arrives on her home planet to find the water has risen and put her entire village under water, just as she predicted. She finds one tall structure remains where the roof is still above the water level.
Upon her arrival, she sees a blinking red light under the water near the edifice. Upon investigation, she finds another cryopod. She opens the pod and brings the inhabitant the surface. She finds
Salvor Hardin , her biological daughter.
History
The relationship begins when Gaal Dornick wins a maths competition started by Dr. Hari Seldon.
Upon arrival, Dr. Seldon tells Dornick that she will be arrested, along with himself.
Despite feeling as if she is being used, she opens up to him and begins to trust him more. It seems his ability to be frank breeds trust.
Relationship Reasoning
Dr. Seldon needed someone to be able to not only understand his theories, but confirm them. His contest was meant to do just that, find someone in the universe that could serve that role.

No real substantive commonalities or shared interests outside of complex maths.
Shared Secrets
Gaal Dornick lied to Empire during their private meeting. She said that by killing Dr. Seldon, it would accelerate the ruin of the Galactic Empire and that only he could shorten the period of darkness following.
In truth, which Dr. Seldon realized, was that she had no idea if this was true. But she believed that his maths were correct and so she guessed that this was a probable outcome.
