Narwhada
Narwhada is a small fishing village to the far north of the Summer Kingdom. It has a close-knit community in the way small settlements often do. It also has a tavern, a lazy and corrupt mayor, a kooky old man selling spell components out of an old lighthouse, and a whirlpool in the middle of the desert. Just how small settlements often do.
The Well of the Wavekeeper brings all sorts of visitors to stop in Narwhada that would normally just pass through on their way to bigger and brighter cities. And what they find when they stop is just as wild as any other small, close-knit community under the Summer sun.
Welcome to Narwhada.
Narwhada is huddled around the docks that sprawl down a portion of the ocean to the east. This far north, the rocky cliffs smooth down into more gradual beaches. The village has turned the prime beachfront into a bustling mix of market and boatyard. Narwhada's market may not be anywhere near as large or glamorous as other markets throughout the Summer Kingdom, but it does boast a wide variety of fish fresh from the water, prepared just about any way you can imagine. The boatyard is similarly spartan in terms of the flashy offerings of more major ports, but rich in its specialities of fishing equipment and boat maintenance.
Past the docks, the residential areas of the village spread into the desert before coming to an abrupt halt as the sand begins to turn towards dunes. The biggest structure in the village in the mayor's house by far, the local inn and tavern bringing up a distant second. The reset of the houses that fill out the village are mostly small and utilitarian, built of sandstone and precious imported woods.
The village and its buildings may not be much to look at, but the village folk that live and breathe in this small neighborhood and spend their days down at the docks provide all the color one could want. Narwhadans are a friendly lot, proud of their small port and their single tavern. They'll happily direct you to the best stall in the market for sushi or recommend the mead that Inoke over at the tavern brews herself.
Narwhada is one of many villages that does not have any merchant nobility overseeing its administration. As such, the governance of the village falls under the responsibility of the Quintessency. Once a decade, the Quins of the State appoint a Qu to act as mayor, who in turn runs the village and ensures that Summerian law is adjudicated and policed.
The current mayor was appointed two years ago. The village is less than impressed with him.
The biggest draw that Narwhada has to offer (other than fish and a decent mead), is the mysterious Well of the Wavekeeper that stands outside the village. The Well is a whirlpool... located miles inland, away from any sources of water.
Followers of the Wavekeeper, an underworship of the Summer Goddess, come from all over to make a pilgrimage to the Well and make a small offering to it.
The Well also allows Narwhada to offer what no other settlement of its size can: a Trial. The nature of the Well allows the village to run and organize the Trial of Narwhada, which occurs on the second Friday of the Twilight every year. It is the biggest event of the year in Narwhada, bringing in way more visitors than the village sees at any other time, many of whom arrive the night before and camp outside the village in order to participate.
