Session 024: Beneath the Boards
General Summary
We begin outside of the Sylandire manor, Zenith frozen in place as he watches his father exit the front door. Luckily, his friends jump into action and hustle the party into an alley, letting Varitan Sylandire go on his way. Talasea and Mouse!Aphid invisibly sneak into the manor, immediately breaking the Tal-and-Aphid-Aren't-Allowed-To-Go-Alone rule. They pass Dalmira and Pretihn on their way up to the master bedroom. Talasea pokes through Varitan's desk, finding a household ledger and a history of Halitara. He tucks his threatening poem into the ledger and then sings some lockpicks into existence to poke around for Varitan's diary. Tal instead finds Eilyn Sylandire's journal. They decide to leave it and head out, passing Dalmira again as they leave and hearing her plaintive question of whether she'll get to see Zenith again.
The party heads back to Tidehaven, where Jack emphatically decides not to join the group heading underwater. Aphid sticks by him in buddy system solidarity. They play a few rousing rounds of Go Fish.
Meanwhile, Mohr, Zenith, and Talasea accompany Konane to conduct her ritual. She casts waterbreathing on the trio and then turns and walks off the edge of the Boards. The underwater crew proves that if their friends jumped off a bridge they would too. Luckily, Konane seems to slow their fall before hitting the water and they slip beneath the waves with no issue. The crew follows Konane under the city, between pillars of stone to a fissure filled with a river of kelp. Konane glows with blue light. They swim to a clear point where a stone circle engraved with runes is. Konane lays out the moon cactus flower and inserts some engraved rods, lets out some liquid.
Konane tells the crew to make sure the ritual isn't interrupted. As fish begin to approach, attracted by the magic, Tal's fish knowledge fails them, Zenith comes in clutch with some bladesong action, and Mohr does some sleep goodness. Tal phantasmal forces a shark.
Then a whirlpool picks up around the stone circle, picking up sand and stones and fish. Mohr and Zenith are pulled in. Tumbling through the water, Mohr notices little shapes that remind her of elementals they've seen, frozen around the edges and making the water colder. Tal super casually turns into a merperson and pulls Zenith and Mohr out of the whirlpool. Konane finishes the ritual and the whirlpool dies down. Mohr asks about the shapes she saw and Konane is like I dunno the whirlpool and the cold doesn't normally happen. Tal remembers the thri'kreen saying they'd gotten cold.
Tal also tries to confront Konane about the whole "child of stars" thing again. Konane grabs Tal's face and is like listen I say all sorts of things, you can't listen to what I say just go oh konane ur so crazy, what is even up with child of stars or summer's scholar or silent night whatever whatever. The three let it pass and continue to follow.
They climb spiral stairs up to the temple and return to Jack and Aphid. Konane tells them to return the following morning to head to the Well. The party splits to spend an evening in Halitara. Tal goes off to ask Sasha, the ticket clerk at the Gemstone, out on a date. Sasha tells them he gets off work in like two hours, they talk until the play lets out and then go for a walk. Tal takes him down to the docks telling ship-life stories. Tal gives him the statue of Cielaveskarraron and Wynonina and he's super pumped. They share a kiss at the very least...
Jack and Zenith go off to check out the experiment thing at the Arcane Congregation. The bored elven receptionist calls up to Safe Adaptation of Fae Experimental Technology (SAFE-T)and sends them up to third floor, third door on the left, burn mark. Methild is waiting for them, having stayed late, fey lookin' dude from the Autumn Kingdom, shaved sides of head and piercing through lip. He tells them about the program, adapting fae magic to make adaptive technology to improve people's lives. Methild has them sign waivers, they both sign before reading it. Jack notices after that one of the side effects described is eternal entrapment in the fey realm. Next, they fill out a questionnaire that asks about ailments or allergies or disabilities they want fixed. Specifically asks about orange juice allergy. Last question is about mother's maiden name. Jack equivocates about not knowing his mother's maiden name, but eventually puts it down at Methild's intense stare. They make a deal that although the ad is for there to be a four hour session for five gold every week, they can make do with a sending once every couple days or once a week for a gold per. Methild tells them to come back to get assigned their experiment.
Aphid and Mohr spend some time together, find a temple of the Star-Eyed One, an aspect of the Winter Goddess, that has a sign inviting people to climb the stairs to the roof to do some star gazing. They settle down together and chat a bit. Talk about home, outside of the Summer Kingdom. It's nice.
We're back at the hotel at the end of the night. Nightly sendings happen. Tal calls Temperance, tells about his date, asks about the storm, Temp says that even the strongest stomachs on board are getting sick with how long they've been in storm, but they are stronger than their stomachs. Zenith calls Verity to flirt. Verity is like well i had a plan but never mind that was cute have a story for you tomorrow.
Next day, the party heads back to Tidehaven. Konane is waiting with a gnome she introduces as Saeng, a priest of Paxathi. Saeng teleports them all to Narwhada. They notice that it's quiet, even quieter than typical, and the people around look downcast. Tal stops a woman who informs them that a third of the village went missing a few days ago and they haven't been able to look for them.
They get halfway to the Well and Saeng looks up, grabs Konane's arm. They say that they feel something, they're entering their domain. Saeng clarifies they mean the domain of their old goddess. The Woman of Woe. They get to the Well and see that there are bodies arranged in the sand around the Well. Roughly a third of a town.
