Auregelmir (/æʉreːɡl̩miːr/)
Freezing winds pass over fields of hardened snow. Small growths of evergreen appear in the brightest sunlight, soon to be eaten by the grazing woolly rhinos. The sun sets early in spring, hiding behind the tall mountains clad in grey and white. But every beam of light is a blessing, for in the winter there are none. South of here grows the great woodlands. Perpetually green throughout the seasons, teeming with life underneath tall pines and spruce trees. On windless days the silence is overbearing, until it is broken by a flash of light and the loudest snap or crack, like that of a whip. The hunters in these woods are equipped with firearms, a rare technology only afforded by the rich on the continent.
This is the very type of romantic description an auregelending would tell others when asked to describe their home country of Auregelmir. A focus on their beautiful nature, and technological superiority. They take pride in their land and people, and the fact that they are both the most developed, but also the most traditional country in the world.
Auregelmir is an ancient monarchy located north of Crownmark. Sizewise it is almost a continent of its own. Dominated by mountains and otherwise rough terrain, it is heavily decentralized. The country is divided into eleven regions, called herað, each ruled over by a jarl. Travel from one herað to another is difficult at best, impossible at worst, and the people rely heavily on ships.

I really like this article - very evocative. It seem Auregelmir is based on Scandinavia. I have an area of Derkomai that is also based on the Scandinavian countries, but I've written next to nothing about them. I'm going to spend more time reading your articles for inspiration!
Glad you like it! It is very much based on Norway and Iceland, the first of which is my home country. I use a lot of local history to inspire me, and I use naming conventions from here that would have been used (and is still in use) hundreds of years ago. This world is a bit bare bones at the moment, but I'll keep filling it with stuff like this!
Summer is almost upon us! Check out Freelands!
Although I'm American for 2 or 3 generations, I have a lot of ancestry (as you might guess from my name) from Norway. I really hope to visit in the next few years. Supposedly, my family is from around Bergen and Trondheim. My aunt and my cousin went to Norway some years ago and I think found the original place where our family is from, so I'll have to ask her about it. My wife's family is also Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish, and they still have contact with some of their family in Denmark. When I start writing about the "Scandinavian" areas in my world, I'll have you check my work! :-)
Cool! I have family in the US for likely the same reason as you have family in Norway! Bergen and Trondheim are both nice cities, as cities go. I'm a rural kind of guy from Romsdal, a few hours' drive south of Trondheim. Don't know if I qualify to "check" your work, but I'll check it out. I'm sure it'll be awesome!
