Bak Høgseti (bɑɑk hœ̀ɡseːti)

Bak Høgseti (translated: behind the high seat/behind the throne), or sometimes just called Bakom (translated: behind, but specifically referring to something placed behind another thing), was a secret society dedicated to maintaining the secrecy and protection of Frossefall, who is quite possibly the last dragon in existence. It was led by the kings of Auregelmir, and its members were either Váryag or trusted sorcerers.

History

Founding

Frossefall was discovered by King Eiktýr I during the construction of the royal palace in Váryagard. Parts of the palace were to be built into a cliff side with a natural network of caves. The intention was to map out and include these caves into the building to serve as emergency escape routes, natural cooling, and expanded storage. While exploring the cave behind what would become the throne room, the king and his men came upon a frozen cavern where a slumbering dragon had made its home.

The imposing white dragon appeared to be in a deep sleep, but awoke immediately when the party approached to investigate. He spoke telepathically to the men, explaining he had sealed himself in the mountain some time after his mate died. He had soared around the globe in search of other dragons, but found none, and hoped to sleep until he was found by either death or another dragon. Now he had been found by humans instead, whom he remarked were significantly more developed than the last humans he had met, as proven by their clothing and weapons. He had likely slept for many millennia.

The king and his men made a vow to keep the location of the dragon a secret, one only to be shared between the royals of Auregelmir or with another dragon, should another exist. They asked for nothing in return, but hoped the dragon would be willing to tell stories of the ancient past, which he was more than happy to do. Thus, Bak Høgseti was founded, and its secret kept ever since.

Disbandment

The group was effectively dissolved with the death of King Ivald “the End” Godwynsón, great-great-grandson of King Eiktýr I. In the war between the Yocilum Empire and the countries of Crownmark, the king had brought most of the Váryag, all but a few of the aure sorcerers, and a significantly sized army to fight at Chesmis. These groups included every member of Bak Høgseti besides the king's brother, later known as King Eiktýr III Godwynsón. There were no survivors on either side after the battle of Chesmis, the event which later became known as The End.

King Eiktýr III, incapable of producing an heir, legitimized the late King Ivald's only son, the bastard prince Andhriminir Ivaldsson. The king, planning to abdicate once the prince had produced an heir, intended to share the existence of Frossefall with him then. Fate would not have it so, as prince Andhriminir was later murdered while defending a witch from Freelander witch hunters. Struck with grief that developed into severe depression, the king never spoke of or to the dragon again.

Andhriminir, posthumously declared king, had unbeknownst produced an heir born after his death. The royal lineage continued, and the great-great-great-granddaughter of King Andhriminir, Queen Isa Hagalldóttir rediscovered Frossefall during maintenance work in the royal palace. She too made the vow her ancestors had made, but refrained from reestablishing the secret society.
