SCHISM IN THE CULT OF THE TWO DIVINES

Not all members of the Children of the Two Divines were unwavering in their devotion. A significant schism occurred within the cult six months before the arrival of the Great Mother Mission in the Far Spinward region of space., led by Chikondi Okafor, a former high-ranking member who had grown increasingly disillusioned by the cult’s brutal methods and the horrific transformation process into bio-mechanoids. This disillusionment spread quietly among a small group of followers who shared Okafor’s doubts and fears. These defectors began to see the cult not as a path to enlightenment and perfection but as a monstrous perversion of their initial beliefs, turning them into tools of destruction and chaos.   The realization that they were part of a starfaring death cult, blindly serving the Perfected’s ambition to spread their twisted form of "perfection," was a profound shock. They witnessed firsthand the brutal raids on innocent colonies, the forcible recruitment, and the merciless transformation of their comrades into biomechanical abominations. The once revered Mother Ma’Kayla, with her promises of ascension and divinity, now appeared as a tyrant enforcing a grotesque metamorphosis upon her followers.   Driven by the need to reclaim their humanity and escape the cult's oppressive grasp, Okafor and the defectors meticulously planned their departure. They knew that any sign of dissent would be met with severe punishment, possibly even death. Their planning had to be clandestine, communicating in hushed whispers and covert signals to avoid arousing suspicion. The defectors became acutely aware that their very lives were at stake, and any misstep could lead to a brutal crackdown by the cult’s enforcers.

The Escape

Chikondi Okafor, once a fervent follower, began to question the cult's extreme practices and the ultimate goal of becoming bio-mechanoids. Recognizing the cult's true nature, Okafor quietly gathered a group of like-minded individuals who were equally disenchanted and fearful for their lives. They meticulously planned their escape, knowing that any sign of dissent would be met with severe punishment or death.   Under the cover of darkness, the defectors seized one of the cult's six remaining Heliades-class ships. Despite the ship's poor maintenance and the cult's dwindling resources, they managed to launch and set a course for KOI-784. The journey was perilous, with the ship's failing systems threatening to expose them to the cult's pursuit at any moment. Nevertheless, their desperation fueled their determination to break free. They were not just escaping; they were fleeing for their very existence.

The Arrival at Dylan Colony

The Heliades-class ship, barely held together, limped into the atmosphere of KOI-784. With fuel reserves nearly depleted, they made a crash landing in the dense jungle surrounding Dylan Colony. The colonists, initially alarmed by the sudden arrival and subsequent crash, quickly mobilized a rescue operation.   The defectors, though physically unharmed, were mentally and emotionally scarred by their experiences. As they were brought to safety, the colonists began to realize the significance of their arrival. The defectors, once devoted members of the Children of the Two Divines, had intimate knowledge of the cult's operations and intentions.

Life Among the Colonists

Integration into Dylan Colony was not immediate. The colonists, wary of the defectors' past affiliations, approached them with caution. However, Chikondi Okafor and the others proved their sincerity by sharing critical intelligence about the Children of the Two Divines. They provided detailed accounts of the cult's structure, strategies, and the psychological manipulation employed by Mother Ma’Kayla.   The defectors’ insights became invaluable to the colony's defense efforts, and those of the Great Mother Mission. Their knowledge helped the colonists bolster their security measures and prepare for potential raids. Over time, trust began to build between the defectors and the colonists. The defectors, eager to atone for their past, worked tirelessly to contribute to the colony’s welfare. They shared their skills and knowledge, integrating themselves into various aspects of colony life. Yet, they remained displaced people, haunted by the memories of their past and the constant fear of being hunted by their former brethren.

The Path Forward

The schism within the Children of the Two Divines underscores the inherent instability and extreme ideology of the cult. The defectors’ plight serves as a powerful testament to the dangers posed by fanatical devotion and the transformative allure of the Perfected. As The Far Spinward Colonies continue to contend with the Children’s threat, the stories and experiences of those who have fled the cult provide hope and a blueprint for resistance against the encroaching danger.   The defectors are a living reminder of the price of fanaticism and the relentless pursuit of an impossible ideal. As displaced people, they seek to rebuild their lives, finding solace in the acceptance and support of the Dylan Colony, while always aware that the shadows of their past might one day catch up with them.
