Vaelish Gant
Prisoner 237 within the walls of Revel’s End, is a member of the Arcane Brotherhood who first engaged in criminal activity by insinuating himself into the trade network of Ten-Towns. He hoped that his work would help the Arcane Brotherhood gain control of the region. A few years ago, shortly after his arrival in Ten-Towns, Gant established a protection racket in Bryn Shander and turned the town against its speaker, Duvessa Shane and supplanted her. He also tried to destabilize the economy of Ten-Towns. His criminal ventures were exposed and he was captured.
Rather than put Gant to death for his crimes in Icewind Dale, the Council of Speakers in Ten-Towns made a deal with representatives of the Lords’ Alliance to have Gant serve a life sentence in Revel’s End, so as not to incur the Arcane Brotherhood’s wrath.
For a long time, Gant held out hope that the Arcane Brotherhood would apply pressure to secure his release, and that the Lords’ Alliance would acquiesce to the brotherhood’s demands rather than risk an all-out attack on Revel’s End. But 4 years later, Gant has been incarcerated long enough to reasonably conclude that no such rescue is forthcoming.
History
Many traders profit in the lucrative market for Icewind Dale’s “white gold,” but the way Vaelish Gant saw it, ivory and Scrimshaw was only the beginning. If the Arcane Brotherhood could gain access to the dwarven mines of Kelvin’s Cairn and the unexploited wealth of the tundra—with its rich furs and pelts, the dale will be well worth holding. And if someone were to discover a valuable new mineral lode somewhere in the Spine of the World, Ten-Towns might become another Mirabar. He especially hoped that the profits generated in Ten-Towns would help Jendrick the Blue secure the position of Archmage Arcane, and then the senior wizard will reward him with a position as an Overwizard. Vaelish Gant was born in the southern city of Athkatla, far down the Sword Coast. He joined the Arcane Brotherhood under Jendrick’s tutelage and started his operations in Waterdeep, hoping that effort would be the key to his career. Gant was soon frustrated by stifling competition, and he decided that gaining a stranglehold on the markets in Ten-Towns would be a better use of his energy and an easier way to impress his mentor.
