Khali

As an organization represented in almost all territories of Fyrra, the Dunarian Caravan needs leadership as much as it needs structure. Carrying the highest possible rank obtainable in the Caravan, holders of the title ‘Khali’ need to excel in both their charisma and their competences when leading the traders’ syndicate.

Tasks and responsibilities

Each Khali governs and represents one of the six main branches of the Dunarian Caravan. Tasked with the representation and business continuity of the Caravan in a certain area of the world, a Khali’s responsibilities are as diverse as the trade of the Caravan itself. From skilful negotiation to determined decision-making, a Khali needs to be ‘on top of their game’ in all fields relating to trade.   In order to ensure favourable trading conditions for the Caravan and its members, a Khali needs to have extensive knowledge in not only the economic situation of the territories in its branch, but also about their political and social challenges. A Khali sometimes makes deals with local leaders in order to ensure the Caravan’s position, which is not always regarded favourably by the other leaders of the territory.   As a person in power, a Khali has many allies and even more enemies. Leaders unhappy with a trade deal concluded with their rivals, traders seeking revenge for their failed business or outsiders prying into the Caravan’s affairs, the challenges a Khali faces are diverse and almost always of human nature. Even from within the Caravan, a Khali can face backlash for unfavourable policies or from overly ambitious Icchars.   It is said that ambition is a trader’s downfall. Rarely does a Khali step down from their position voluntarily. As most Khali are traders themselves, their rank directly influences their economical success, and vice versa.

Powers and Position

Even though a Khali is the highest ranking position in the Dunarian Caravan, they still strongly depend on the local powers for the execution of their rights. The Dunarian Caravan is essentially, a trader’s union and no official authority.   In fulfilling their tasks, Khali can command and delegate tasks to their Icchars, who each regulate a territorial or material subsection of the branch. These Icchars can in turn delegate the taskes to lower ranking members in the Caravan.   Khali are voted for by the merchants of their branch who hold voting powers and the other Khali. In order to stay in power, a Khali needs to balance the wishes of the Caravan’s members, the requirements of the local politicians and Caravan’s internal organisation. Since differentiating friend from foe is difficult, many Khali rely on personal guards and intelligence units for their own safety.
