Magic

Magic is an umbrella term, covering all different ways in which The Will can be used to shape the reality of the world. Generally speaking, magic is seperated into elemental magic and manipulation magic, also called Arts. The strenght of magic depends on several aspects, including understanding of the affected element or object, affinity and ability of a person to manipulate their Will in a certain way. Using magic on a 'not opposing' subject (like an object or a willing person) needs less Will than manipulating an opposing subject (like an animal or even an opposing person).

Elemental magic

Elemental magic is a term used for the manipulation of Elemental Cores through a person's Will. Elemental magic produces new elements into the physical world, instead of simply enhancing the existing elements. The strenght of an elemental magic spell depends on the caster's amount of elemental cores and their proficiency of casting the respective spell.

Fire core magic

  • Pyromancy: casting fire-based magic and heat.
  • Illusionism: casting colour and light based magic to create visions of things in the world, without these thing being there.
  • Lighting magic: casting lightning magic.

Earth core magic

  • Organic magic: enhancing the growth of organic material and plants by producing additional elements. Healing elemental magic is seen as a subclass of organic magic.

Air core magic

  • Kinetic magic: Everything that moves in the world has a kinetic vector, either influenced by a Will or by the general flow of reality. When using kinetic magic, a person adds their own vector to an object and thus causes it to move according to the person's Will. The greater the other vector (because of its weight or another Will influencing it), the more kinetic magic is needed to move an object.
  • Stoppage magic: the usage of kinetic magic to negate any kind of movement in an object, animal or person. Elemental defesive magic is a variety on this type of magic.

Water core magic

  • Liquid magic: magic used to manipulate all kinds of liquid and fluids. Actually manipulates the fluidity and water aspect of the liquid. In case of liquids like lava, the fire aspect (from the fire core) is manipulated instead.
  • Frost magic: magic used to cool down objects or fluids.

Arts

Manipulation magic or Arts are terms used to discribe the manipulation of the physical world through a person's Will. Contrary to to elemental magic, manipulation magic does only change existing elements in the world instead of producing new elements. Consequently, a person does not need elemental cores to cast manipumating magic.
  • Enhancement magic: Manipulation magic used on a person's body to enhance their physical capabilities. This can be used on a person's own body or on another person. Healing manipulation magic and defensive manipulation magic can be seen as subclasses of enhancement magic.
  •
  • Animal controlling: a special type of manipulatio magic used to manipulate the physical body of animals and monsters by forcing the Will onto the consiousness of the animal. While it is technically possible to also manipulate humans, this usage of controlling magic is strictly forbidden in most places. This, however does not stop some scientists from trying to develop human subjugation techniques.
  •
  • Artifact magic: Artifact magic is a type of manipulation magic that uses the Will on artifactsand the magic cast on them for spells. While normal artifact usage can also be seen as artifact magic, real specialists of this type of magic can use very complex artifacts that need a high level of control of the Will to use proficiently. Users of artifact magic are called Artificers.

Healing magic

Healing magic can be based on both elemental and manipulation magic. When using manipulation healing magic, a medic simply enhances the physical healing abilities of a person. When using elemental healing magic, the medic adds organic elements to the body in order to heal better or faster. In both cases the healing ability depends on the medic's level of knowledge of the relevant body part.

Curse magic

Curse magic is the term used to describe an Art in which a person uses their Will in order to put a short or long-term enchantment on a physical object or even another Will. Typical for curses is their conditional nature, meaning that the enchantment only resolves when a certain condition is met. Every curse has a ‘condition’, an effect and a duration. The greater these are, the more difficult it is to cast the curse. As a result, small, short and/or very specific curses are easier to cast than curses with a larger or longer effect or whose ‘conditions’ are more broad.   To ‘break’ or ‘undo’ a curse, you need to have a general understanding of its condition, effect and duration. This can be done through high levels of magic sensing or by gathering information about the curse if it was cast by a known spellCurses can be construed in a way that allows them to be difficult to sense or to break. Even though all curses can be broken in theory, in practice a curseweaver needs high proficiancy or familiarity with the cast curse in order to break it.   Curses can be contrued using only manipulation magic. Many curses also include an elemental component however. Emblems are a special type of highly complex curse magic cast by an Emblematist.

Defense magic

Defense magic is the general term used for any type of protection magic. Defense magic can be based on elemental (kinetic) or on manipulation magic. When used with kinetic magic, a person changes or stops the movement of a physical projectile. When using manipulating magic, a person changes the vector of the movement by applying its own Will on the projectile and thus changing its direction or stopping its movement. In practice defensive magic is used with shields or as an protective enhancement.

Item based magic

Item based magic is magic using objects in order to cast a spell. The object helps the caster focus their Will in the correct way to cast a spell. Sometimes the items or objects are also part of the cast spell and are being changed through manipulation magic. In other instances the objects simply help the caster to focus their Will for an elemental spell. A combination of both usages is also possible.   Contrary to artifact magic, item based magic does not require items that already have magic embedded in them.
