Achenae

It is not, as you have suggested in your last letter, that I have found fault in you, my dear son, that I have sent you from the city and appointed you despot of Achenae, a post far removed from the intrigues and venomous nature of the court. In your post, you alone will be responsible for feeding the whole of Lapara. When my time is no more, you alone will be fit to rule all.
Loukas I Aristenos, in a letter to his son Tiberius

This article is about the peninsula of Achenae. For the imperial province that bears the same name, please see Achenae Province. For the collection of territories subject to Basileus Basil III Nikolaides, please see Empire of Achenae.

Characterized by the low, weathered, Mountains of Metsovo that connect the peninsula to the steep and treacherous Northern Pindus Mountains, Achenae largely consists of rolling hills and the wide flood plains of its numerous rivers. Frequently awash in the mineral rich waters from the many Metsovan springs, the soil of Achenae's floodplains is exceptionally rich and fertile. Farmland in southern Achenae, especially, is generally considered to be among the most productive in all of Eudokonia.

Geography

The Peninsula of Achenae, along with its twin peninsula of Akantha, separate the Inner Sea from the Outer Sea, leaving only the narrow Akanthan Strait to join them. The Mountains of Metsovo, which run along the peninsula's spine, divide it into three regions: the low-lying wooded Inner Coast, the mineral-rich foothills of Western Achenae, and the fertile floodplains of the Heartlands.

The Inner Coast

Its position along the Inner sea gives the low-lying region of the Inner Coast its frequent rainfall and lush forests, of which the High Grove, south of the town of Kylis, is the most famous. Common legend says that this dense forest is populated by elves who did not flee Eudokonia during the Sundering like the rest of their kind. Without the mineral resources or vast agricultural estates of the rest of the peninsula, the Inner coast is a largely undeveloped populated by rough and sturdy folk.

Western Achenae

Western Achenae is dominated by the Arsanias River, which flows from three distinct sources through the many mining and quarrying settlements of the region before joining together and flowing into the Akanthan Straight. The Elevated City, Metilene, is situated on the many islands of the river's delta and watches over the traffic of the straight.

The Heartlands

When an outsider thinks of Achenae, he will most likely envision the Heartlands that make up the majority of the peninsula, under the shadow of the Mountains of Metsovo. The home of wide valleys, carefully tended farmland, and a host of vast, sprawling, estates. The millet and sorghum that was native to the region when Laparans first arrived are now the principle crops of the Heartlands' vast agricultural industry and are exported to all corners of Eudokonia.
