The Creation

Long ago, before time itself, there existed only the Beast, who roamed the vast nothing, voraciously consuming anything that sprang into existence to sate its massive appetite. Upon this creature's back, the twins Astenor and Denemor came into being, like a pair of fleas nestled in its black fur. As the pair grew in size, they noticed that the Beast consumed everything that it saw and that, one day, they would no longer be able to escape the ravenous being's attention. It was Denemor who first spoke to Astenor, the Creator of Worlds, "If there is to exist anything apart from this foul creature, it must cease to be." The pair began to pluck loose hairs from the Beast's back, and fashioned them into a rope. It was when Denemor began to choke the Beast that it took notice of the two of them, thrashing in its rage. In the battle that ensued, the young goddesses were successful in slaying the Beast, but Denemor was bitten, grievously wounded, and fell into a deep sleep.

After the Beast was slain, Astenor looked around into the vast nothing and seeing naught but her sister, motionless from her injury, began to sing a song of pain and regret. From this song, a great ball of light appeared to cheer her. The areas stained by the vast ocean of ichor seeping from the Beast, however, resisted the light and was stained black. The flaxen-haired one sang again, creating a pair of lights inside the darkness to tame it, but together, they were unable to fully dispel the darkness. As Astenor continued to sing, so was all of creation born from her sweet voice.

When Denemor awoke from her slumber, she saw the vast area around her filled with the most wondrous of creations and let out a long wail, for her injury had changed her and she could not stand the sight of any of it. Her hair and eyes, which once matched her sister's, were now the deepest shades of darkness. All around her, creation dissolved into nothingness as she cried out, "To preserve the order of things, all that you create shall be doomed to decay, death and destruction. You shall forever be known as the Creator of Worlds, but I am the Destroyer of Worlds." Astenor was distressed at this and turned to plead her sister to spare what she had created, but her pleas fell on deaf ears as world after world was shattered into nothingness.

Seeing that there was no way to dissuade the Destroyer from what she planned, Astenor knew what must be done. With a blade formed from pure light, she lunged at the raven-haired one and struck home. Denemor, fatally wounded began to bleed into the vast space between the worlds, but some of which fell upon our world and crystallized here.
