Lictor Foris
An old title from the Republic of Marnain, it is the name for the hereditary bodyguards of judges in the settlements beyond Marnain's borders.
Since Marnain became a republic, with the nobility no longer guaranteed a place on the Council of Eleven, all but the largest noble houses have dissolved of any hereditary rank. Those who hold this title are now only found in the overseas territories.
Requirements
As a hereditary rank, it's passed down too the oldest or most capable child. Before holding the title an eligible person must demonstrate martial prowess and a good understanding of legal code of Marnain.
Appointment
In the past, the oath of protection and guidance was taken before their charge. With very few of these charges still in existence, the oath is usually taken before whoever they inherit the role from, or the community they are part of.
Duties
The duties of a lictor originally were merely to ensure no harm came to their assigned charge, usually a judge from another allied noble house. They also carried out the judgement on some cases, and were usually the executioner for others.

A greatsword without a point is the ceremonial badge of office, acting as a symbol of justice and as a practical method of execution.
