Kilaxa (pakríska)

Glaxa is the second largest city in Kalixíalx, the western province of the empire of Resak. It's located on Jakrúl Peninsula, at the coast of Úrtal Sea, close to the border with the northwestern province of Pakróalx.

Demographics

The majority of Glaxa's inhabitants are Rexans and Pakrans, along with smaller communities of Jatrilnúxans, and descendants of Húlpakrans from beyond Úrtal Sea.

Industry & Trade

Glaxa produces salt, distinct pottery, cotton and various fruits, and a number of famous artists (especially poets) hail from the city, most notably Úax, who introduced pakran-style poetry to the rexans.

Infrastructure

The market square of Glaxa is located at the heart of the city, near which are the main temples of the city, including that of the pakran sea god Asakíox; Knatarus, main deity of the rexans, as well as shrines dedicated to rexan rulers.

History

Originally known as Kilaxa, the city was among the first of many colonies founded by Pakrans during their expansion along the coast of Úrtal Sea, both in Laxilþía and Emlas, driven by overpopulation and strain on the ecosystem in their native jungle.
According to local legends, it was founded by the hero Sútalxos from Efþíxis who, guided by a swarm of fireflies, lead his people from their mountain home, down to the sea and then across it to the Jakrúl Peninsula. Sútalxos is said to have lead his fleet while riding on the back of a shark, which became a common motif on the city's coins1.
Kilaxa eventually became one of largest pakran cities, and an important source of salt (mined in nearby hills), cotton and various fruits, as well as fine pottery either painted or shaped like fish and flowers.
Like the húlpakrans in Emlas, most pakrans looked down on the people of Kilaxa due to their luxurious lifestyle and heavy influence from the natives of the region, a sentiment that still lives on to this day. Because of this, the city showed minimal resistance when it was eventually conquered by the rexans, and now houses one of the largest and busiest markets in the whole empire, with goods coming from as far as Dalra and Orrs.

Architecture

Most of the older temples and other large structures in the city resemble those found in Pakróalx, characterized by corbeled arches, while more recent ones are generally similar to those found in other rexan cities. Common decorative elements include sculpted or painted flowers, fishes (especially sharks) and fireflies.

1More recent versions of the story say that the shark scared off the fish near the city, in an attempt to explain the effect of overfishing in the region.
