STATIC 4: Eyeball Catapults & Talking Skeletons

General Summary

Wherein the Blinkertons discover that two djs is too many, search for an incredible earring, and uncover more questions than answers

Too Many DJs

Fresh off a pretty gnarly fight with some "crunks," The Interdimensional Blinkerton Detective Agency decided that it had just about enough of this vibe cube. To make an exit, however, they need to go deeper into the cube. Paradoxical, but this world is apparently like that.   They did so, and found themselves in a kind of "velvet rope" section of the cube. A large portal in front of them led to a presumably "VIP" section of this strange club. The only problem is that the way was barred by a high elf named Ether. After consuming one of Tridge's tasty "bomb" peppers, Ether was amenable to letting them cut the line. The only problem is that he can't. He needs the go-ahead from the boss upstairs (presumably in the VIP section). If, however, our heroes can best his crew in a game of "Shake 'Em Up, Guess 'Em Up" he'll vouch for them with his boss.   To do so, the Blinkies needed to 1) drink a "special" bottle of fortified wine and 2) beat Ether's crew at a best out of five pantomime guessing game. They did this rather easily, though the adequate performances of Nero Rubicant and Hypatia and the cunning use of an Altered substance by Tridge. Corinna Himmelswander did her best to get our "detectives" to guess vegetable, but that proved to be outside her skillset. She let everyone know that this game is stupid and for stupid babies anyway as she muttered her way through the portal.   That portal did, indeed, lead to a VIP room of sorts--a giant dance floor made of eyeballs. That seemed appropriate, as a bunch of "Broholders" were doing a bunch of dancing, all to the beat of DJ Fuckbrain, who doesn't seem to have the best intentions. That feeling proved to be correct, as the Blinkies discovered that Fuckbrain was somehow "siphoning" the vibes for his own intentions. There was little time to ponder what that could mean before the Broholders, and then Fuckbrain, attacked. This was a particularly nasty fight, with the Broholder's freezing ray and Fuckbrain's psychic assault doing significant damage. The Blinkertons, however, proved to be of sterner stuff than a vibe-killing dj and prevailed over Fuckbrain.   It is worth noting here that Hypatia did some damage of her own by using a violently removed Broholder eyeball as a catapulted missile. It was both gross and incredible.   They then headed back to The Glow to let Zephal, Queen of the Glow, know the good news. She was eager to pay them for their efforts, but could not provide the one reward they sought--passage out of here. Asking around offered an intriguing clue--there has been one individual that "blinked" through the Glow before. His name was unknown, but he had dark purple skin, a shock of white hair amidst a sea of black, and a really sick earring. With these small details in hand, the Blinkertons had no choice but to wait around and see if they were Displaced again.

Connection is the Key

Luckily, they didn't have to wait long. They found themselves undergoing Displacement at a seemingly random moment, but also as if they were being Displaced because whatever they had come here to do had been accomplished. As they traveled through the Displacement, Tridge had a vision of the individual described by the denizens of the Glow. He happens to be the owner of the voice that apprised the group of danger when they first formed (see STATIC 1: Contracts Signed & Market Bound). He had just enough time to tell Tridge that "connection is what is important!" before vanishing. Mysterious!   Tridge shared that information with the Blinkertons as they found themselves right when they were before entering the Glow--back in "No Future," the erstwhile nightclub turned Displacement hotspot. Corinna, however, as resident horizon walker, could detect no indication of a planar portal nearby. If it was here, it is gone now.   It was then decided to report back to Messelum, as the presence of this other traveler does, indeed, count as a clue. Messelum was most intrigued and asked our detectives to stand by as he consults with Rare. Having no better clues (and being on that retainer, after all), they agreed to do just that.

And That's Where We Left It

We'll see what the Displacement has in store for the Blinkies during our next session.

Varied & Sundry Details

  • The "shake 'em up" consumed by the Blinkertons consisted of dragonfruit fortified wine mixed with a lump of something that smelled strongly of lime. This is an important detail.
  • The Blinkies assisted a dimension-traveling bounty hunting skeleton named Brassjaw with a couple of his targets. He later thanked them and provided what insight he could about the Displacement over pints at a nearby tavern. Unfortunately, Brassjaw was also Displaced, but not before leaving his revolver behind for Hypatia (not to mention the reward they could now claim for Brassjaw's bounties). Nice!
  • Tridge assisted in ending the suffering of some wailing ghosts. That meant that all the Blinkies also assisted and got beat up pretty good for their efforts. The ghosts, however, were put to rest.
  • Venomhead offered a strange "prophecy" to the group: "Not every song is for slumber, darlings. The rain will tell you its secret if you let it." Weird!
