Ullmfisst (ULM-fsht)
Properties
Material Characteristics
Ullmfisst refers to the end product of a process called "magma desiccation," instead of particular species of organic material. As such, the structure of the wood is as varied as the tree, bush, or shrub undergoing the process.
The final result is usually gray in color and significantly lighter than it appears. It lingers somewhere between a "soft" and "hard" wood, making it ideal for woodworking pursuits.
Geology & Geography
Found exclusively in areas of volcanic activity around the Drembari Isles. Luu is a prominent source of the material, as are the small brushes that pock-mock The Burnpile in Kalope.
Origin & Source
Ullmfisst is the result of "magma desiccation," in which superhot material below the surface of the Isles comes in contact with a root system of an organic material, most often wood. Ullmfisst occurs when that wood is slowly dried out and hardened rather than instantly destroyed. As such, it is a quite rare occurrence.
History & Usage
Everyday use
Because of its rarity, and the "damage" the material undergoes as it becomes Ullmfisst, the wood is most often used in ornate, decorative capacities. An intricately carved Ullmfisst dining table can be seen as a symbol of status for any prospering merchant. A cameo of a beloved's portrait carved out of Ullmfisst would, similarly, been see as a family heirloom worth passing down over generations.
Cultural Significance and Usage
As the "magma desiccation" process only occurs in Isles with volcanic activity, Ulmfisst is heavily associated with Luu and Kalope. The artisans of Luu have gone so far as to lobby for Ullmfisst to become a protected asset for that Isle, which would result in Luu exerting great control over export tariffs and licensed harvesting. These efforts, so far, have been unsuccessful.
Hazards
Harvesting Ullmfisst is not without danger. The inexperienced logger may find themselves cutting a tree still in the process of desiccation, inadvertently dousing themselves in lava. Such a mistake is usually fatal.
Reusability & Recycling
Ullmfisst is considered a renewable resource. Both Ullmfiist Harvesting unions, on Luu and Kalope, have initiatives dedicated to repopulating the magma fields of their respective Isles with plenty of trees to ensure a steady supply of Ullmfisst for future endeavors.
