Lago de Dos Vías

The Lago de Dos Vías (Two-Way Lake) is an enormous brackish inland sea with two relatively narrow entrances (the Entradas Montilla) cutting right through the Great Dividing Range, connecting it to the open sea. Due to the moderate tidal range of a little over three metres, strong currents of up to a little over six knots run through the sea entrances depending on the tide. As a result access to the inland sea is heavily influenced by the tide and time.
By water multiple explorers ran into the strong currents at the entrance to the Lago de Dos Vías. The first explorers all reported very strong seabound currents and two treacherous waterways that would threaten the survival of their ships. It was explorer Arnau Montilla who was the first to figure the current to be a tidal current. On his second trip to the sea's entrance in 1623, awaiting the shifting tide combined with a favourable wind he also became the first to report to have entered the Lago de Dos Vías.
