Maridara Confederacy

The Maridara Confederacy is a very unique nation when compared to any other nation. It slowly arose in the second half of the 18th century when piracy and privateering became an increasing threat at sea around primarily the Sinisterran East Coast. Privateers were a blessing and a curse for many governments. In times of conflict and war they were a quick-to-call-upon force at sea to harass enemies and threaten their supplies and trade. When conflict ended however and many privateers lost their livelihood and turned to piracy. Some of the most successful pirates had taken possession of many enemy ships, which gave way to the rise of entire pirate fleets.   Though amassing lots of wealth and sizable fleets, pirates saw difficulty finding refuge in ports that accepted them. This led to their desire of having their own base of operations to resupply and sail out of. From roughly the 1750s to the 1770s the East coast saw significant organized raids and sieges of coastal forts and settlements in an attempt by pirates to settle and find a base of operations.   Real success came in 1775 pirates managed to capture the stronghold of Korfez Limani. The settlement, a large coastal town on a deep bay with a relatively narrow entrance, had both a strategically placed coastal fortress, as well as an inland battery that guarded the primary highway through a mountain pass. Having managed to capture both, the pirates gained a strong and easily defensable hold on Cennet Yarimadasi, the Paradise Peninsula in the North East of Sinisterra.   With Baía Profunda as a base of operations the pirates started an organized expansion. To everyone’s surprise they managed to implement a form of government that controlled the otherwise anarchic nature of the pirates. A ‘Code of Conduct’ was signed between the participating fleet-captains which governs its subjects both on land and at sea.   Gradually the pirates got hold of the entire Paradise Peninsula and divided it into multiple states, forming a confederacy together. Each state got its own Admiral to govern it and enforce the Code of Conduct. Ironically, these ‘admirals’ hardly ever see any time at sea. In turn the Confederacy as a whole is governed by the Grand Admiral, who rules from the capital in Korfez Limani, but has little to say in anything other than defence and foreign relations. Today the country is largely self-proficient in terms of basic needs and goods. Most of its wealth is generated from plundering, smuggling and military and non-aggression treaties. The Maridara Confederacy has the highest number of trained soldiers per capita in the world.
