New Eldonian Colonies
The New Eldonian Colonies (NEC) were found in 1636 in the far North-Eastern part of Sinisterra. From there the Eldonian colonists started expanding Westward along the coast all the way to the North-Western side of the continent. The new colonies on the North-East coast offered sparse opportunity for settlement, given the relatively dry coast line and lack of fresh water except for some small creeks. The sea on the other hand did provide ample food to colonists deciding to settle there.
The coastline on the North side and especially on the North-Eastern side posed other challenges. While food and fresh water were abundant there, the dense jungle and sometimes threatening wildlife didn't facilitate settlement as much. With their minds set on settling however, the Eldonians and Firthians having travelled to this side of Sinisterra didn't manage to secure a solid foothold on the continent. While inland expansian remained difficult and unattractive for over one and a half century, the coastline saw many settlements erected and a good expansion in population.
From the late 17th century the far Western side of Sinisterra started becoming part of the New Eldonian Colonies as well. This part initially attracted the more daring and adventurous explorers and colonists, as well as those dissatisfied with colonial governance or conditions elsewhere. While these new settlements saw a real desire for completely independent settlement and governance, the Eldonian government responded by starting many penal colonies along the coast and sending a significant military presence. Although hindering the groth of this part of the New Eldonian Colonies somewhat, the fertile lands easily made up for this.
The New Eldonian Colonies have always remained tumultuous however. While all colonies along the Northern coast of Sinisterra kept struggling with nature and the environment, the New Western colonies kept struggling to get a hold of many of its residents. When the Eldonian Government in Aldion shifted its attention from their colonies in Sinisterra to their colonies over East, things started to go downhill for the New Eldonian Colonies. This started with the military coup in the Western colonies of Sinisterra in 1848. Although attempts were made to retain the colonies, by 1853 it was abundantly clear that these attempts were futile. The Western colonies were lost.
Dissatisfaction in the North-Western colonies of the NEC rose not only due to the decreasing support from the government in Aldion, but also through hope of becoming independent as well. While many protests and small uprisings occured between 1859 and 1879, the authorities of the NEC always managed to suppress the unrest. Until 1880 that is, when an organised rebellion erupted on the Western side of the |large river|. General Wilbur Jessop was elected by the rebels to lead its armies and is since considered the head of state for the self-declared Free Eldonian States (FES).
Fighting continues today. While spread somewhat thinly on multiple continents, the Eldonians thus far have managed to defend its colonial possessions adequetly, in part by enlisting mecenaries from Aldion in their army. The rebels of the Free Eldonian States are primarily deploying guerilla tactics thus far. However with official support of the Imperial Federation of Novaris and rumoured support of the Maridara Confederacy the FES are gaining strength and better equipment to fight for their freedom.
