Barbarians
A catch-all for all the various humans on the fringes that the settled peoples consider “barbarians”. An extremely varied and multipolar grouping, they live mostly in the lands of the moon to the west, surrounding the fringes of Sarkon, often raiding its border towns and remote outposts. The largest groups of barbarians are the Enkis in the south, the Tourghesh in the northern foothills, and the Bodyund in the steppe and desert oases to the west. They often look much like the Then, with tawny skin, dark hair, and narrow eyes, but taller, burlier, more physically imposing, fed on a steady diet of meat and milk. Most are herders, pastoralists, and nomads, the lands they occupy being poorly suited to agriculture, but the grasses of the plains and mountains being perfect for sheep, goats, horses, around which their cultures revolve. Maligned by the settled peoples upon whom they often prey, they nonetheless hold a certain mystique to poets, artists, and magicians, their barren lands supposedly suffused with magic called upon and manipulated by their shamans and witch doctors. The Bodyund are the largest and most feared group stretching over most of the western steppe and lying in the middle of the trade routes between Blackrock and Sarkon. Since Örgils’ usurpation as khaghan of the Bodyund and his subsequent sujugation of neigbouring peoples into his confederation, petty raids on merchant caravans have decreased dramatically, replaced by a protection racket the Bodyund extort for passage through their lands.
Barbarian languages include: Bodyund, Enki (Ekungi and Wawenk), Kala (Kala proper, Ket, and Imskikh), Benshmana, Tourgesh, and Uitla. Only Bodyund will likely be relavent; potentially also Tourgesh.
Barbarian Names
As barbarians are a very wide group consisting of different peoples, their names are equally non-uniform. Generally they are mononymous, though high status males will often use a patronymic (son of...). Enki and Kala names are similar to Niungde, and Benshmana names similar to those of Mahanjatis.Bodyund and Tourgesh Male Name Examples
