Vegilian Codices

The Vegilian Codices are occult manuals and journals written by the 10th century Hadrumentian mage Vegilian. Three such codices are known: the Codex Quinque Infernorum, or Book of the Five Hells; the Codex Umbrarum, or Book of Shadows; and the Codex Vitae Mortisque, or Book of Life and Death. Written in oddly articulated prose, and not having been translated out of the original Vallaran, these codices are largely inaccessible to most but the most devoted to their occult secrets. The Codex Quinque Infernorum, suposedly authored first of the volumes, displays the most lucid prose, while the Codex Vitae Mortisque is written in a very convoluted and difficult to decipher manner, often including words that appear nowhere else in the Vallaran language.   The Codex Quinque Infernorum, after a brief introduction, begins with an account of the plane of Porphyrus, the great maze:
In labyrinthō magnō Porphyrī,
sub caelō nigrō, sine sōle, errō.
In vallīs, quō dolorem quaerō,
